Pierce and Walker Get Back to Work
June 22, 2002

By Shira Springer, Globe Staff, 6/22/2002

The Celtics' season may have ended just three weeks ago, but that hasn't stopped cocaptains Antoine Walker and Paul Pierce from getting back to work.

Both players are in Boston this weekend raising money for their charitable foundations. Walker and Pierce will continue to focus on providing disadvantaged children with opportunities by conducting summer camps, hosting groups at Celtics games, and supporting school programs.

The festivities started last night with Walker holding a benefit cruise for the 8 Foundation. The foundation supports inner-city youth through sports and education.

Walker was scheduled to attend with fellow Celtics Eric Williams, Vitaly Potapenko, Walter McCarty, and assistant coach Lester Conner. The Patriots had also planned to be well represented by Lawyer Milloy, J.R. Redmond, and Kenyatta Jones.

On Monday night, Pierce will launch The Truth fund with a party at the Hard Rock Cafe beginning at 7:30. The fund will allow Pierce to keep working with children in the Boston area and his hometown of Inglewood, Calif.

While the NBA and Fannie Mae Foundation recognized Pierce for his community service at the end of the regular season, Walker will receive the Athlete of the Year award at the 30th annual testimonial banquet for the Coalition for United Community Action tonight in Chicago. The award recognizes Walker's community and game accomplishments this past season. Walter Payton is among the past recipients.
