In a draft that included 39 underclassmen entries and five
foreigners, Darius Songaila was selected with the 50th pick in
the 2002 NBA Draft. The 21st pick in the second round, Songaila
was picked up by the Boston Celtics.
Other ACC players drafted in this year's NBA
draft included Jay Williams (Duke) as the #2 pick to Chicago and
Mike Dunleavy (Duke) as the #3 pick to Golden State. Chris
Wilcox (Maryland) was the #8 pick overall and will head to L.A.
to join the Clippers. Meanwhile, Maryland's Juan Dixon was taken
17th overall by Washington.
In the second round, Roger Mason, Jr. was
selected by the Chicago Bulls as the 31st overall pick in the
draft while Duke's Carlos Boozer was picked up by Cleveland with
the 35th pick.
With the 44th pick overall, Chicago picked up
their third ACC player of the 2002 draft in former Maryland star
Lonny Baxter.
** Note: The second round selections are
really one space higher in the draft order due to Minnesota
losing their pick. For example, Darius is actually the 49th
selection although he will be known as the 50th pick in the
draft.
