THE NEW ADVENTURES OF LAUREL AND HARDY: FOR LOVE OR MUMMY (1999)

Whose idea was this, you ask? None other than Larry Harmon, who basically stole the rights to two classic movie characters out from under Stan Laurel's nose just before he died. The result is this misbegotten, direct-to-video wheezer which won't convert any Laurel & Hardy haters and is likely to offend their most loyal followers. Bronson Pinchot (of TV's "Perfect Strangers") and Gailard Sartain (Kathy Bates' husband in Fried Green Tomatoes) do a passable job of evoking Stan and Ollie, which is more than one can say for the script. This is to real L&H comedies what Beatlemania is to The Beatles. Rent the real thing instead.
