ZAP! BAM! POW! Holy Internet, Batman, a website all about our many adventures with lots of bat- pictures!
When Superman was introduced as a comic book character in 1938 and his popularity took off, all the comic book companies jumped on the bandwagon and created many new "super-heroes" to compete with the "Man of Steel". Some like Captain Marvel also became very popular while others were mere copies of the Man of Steel and didn't last long.

DC comics in 1939 turned to Bob Kane to create another character to go along with Superman. Kane, with the help of Bill Finger, came up with The Batman and a legend was born.
Batman proved to be one of the best loved comic book characters and has endured for over 60 years. Besides his comic book adventures in the pages of Batman and Detective comics, Batman also proved a success in two movie serials (1943's Batman starring Lewis Wilson) and 1949's Batman and Robin with Robert Lowery. It took a lot longer for Batman to turn up on our TV screens, 1965 to be exact, when ABC brought us Adam West and Burt Ward as Batman and Robin in a TV series shown two nights a week in a "camp" style to attract the adult audience as well as kids who would naturally watch for the action scenes.
It wasn't until 1989 that a more serious approach brought Michael Keaton as Batman and Jack Nicholson as the Joker in the first of four movies from Warner Bros. with Tim Burton in charge of the first two films and Joel Schumacher directing the last two. (Batman, Batman Returns, Batman Forever and Batman and Robin.) The last of these four films unfortunately seemed more like the 1960's TV verison and audiences were turned off by it. However, Christopher Nolan has been brought in to re-introduce Batman with Christian Bale in the dual role of Bruce Wayne and Batman, "the Dark Knight." Batman Begins is one of the most eagerly awaited movies to be released in 2005.

"Batman Bat-site" is dedicated to Bob Kane and Bill Finger, the creators of Batman, and those who have contributed to the Caped Crusader's legend ever since; to Dick Sprang, whose artwork in the Batman comic books in the 1950's got me interested in the first place, and to my Uncle Louie, a Batman fan who got me interested in comic books (although while he was a big Batman fan, I ended up more of a Superman fan! "Batman Bat-site" has been online since April, 2004. |
