      A major international conflict, World War I was fought from 1914 to 1918.  It became the most deadly and destructive war the world had ever seen to that time. Some 8.5 million soldiers died during the war, and another 21 million were wounded. More than 25 countries eventually went to war, aligned with either the Allied or Central powers.
        The Allies—who won the war—included primarily France, Great Britain, Russia, Italy, Japan, and, from 1917, the United States. The Central Powers were formed mainly of Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Turkey.
