  • MOSAIC presents Train the Trainers August 27 - 29!!

    The Mosaic Training of Trainers will teach participants to effectively present the Multi Cultural Institute’s curriculum Cultural Considerations In Assisting Victims of Crime, which is a one-day interactive workshop designed to enhance the ability of service providers to effectively assist culturally and ethnically diverse crime victims.     After completing the Train the Trainers traning you will become a part of MOSAIC, which is a group of Colorado victim service and criminal justice professionals who have been working together since the fall of 1998 to address the need for cultural competency in services to victims of crime. MOSAIC is committed to meeting this need through:

  • Training agencies and victim service providers about cultural competency.
  • Opening access to resources and networking for traditionally underserved communities.
  • Creating a culture which values and promotes diversity of victim service professionals, through development of culturally competent recruitment, hiring, and retention strategies.

    About the curriculum…

    MOSAIC utilizes the curriculum Cultural Considerations In Assisting Victims of Crime, originally developed in 1998 by the National Multicultural Institute in Washington, DC. Funded by the Office for Victims of Crime, US Department of Justice, the curriculum was piloted in Denver, Colorado and nationwide. The curriculum introduces victim service professionals, law enforcement officers, and prosecutors to cultural issues that should be considered when serving victims of crime.   • What is Cultural Competency?

    Cox and Beale define Cultural competency as a process of learning that leads to an ability to effectively respond to the challenges and opportunities posed by the presence of social cultural diversity in a defined social system.

    Cultural Competency is important in victim services because those who are most vulnerable to violent crime are often underserved by victim assistance programs.

  • Minorities, and African Americans in particular, tend to be disproportionately affected by violent crime*
  • Asian and American Indian women are more likely to be victims of rape than White or Black women*
  • 34% of American Indian women, 18.8% of African American women, 17.7% of White women, and 6.8% of Asian women who are raped report their rape (NIJ National Violence Against Women survey, 11/98)
  • 83% of women with disabilities will be sexually abused in their lifetime (National Association for Community Living, 1995)
  • Domestic Violence occurs at the same frequency (25%-33%) between gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender partners as it does in heterosexual relationships (National Coalition of Anti-Violence Programs, 1998)
  • but…

    In a 1995 survey of 319 law enforcement and prosecutor based victim assistance programs, about 65% of victims served were White, 22% were African American, 8% were Hispanic, and 5% were Asian, Native American, or from other ethnic groups.

    About the Training…

    Cultural Considerations In Assisting Victims of Crime is a day and a half interactive workshop designed to enhance the ability of service providers to effectively assist culturally and ethnically diverse crime victims. Using a broad definition of cultural diversity, the training will introduce some common cultural barriers to effective service delivery and provide participants with the knowledge, skills, and awareness necessary to overcome these barriers.

    Training components include:

  • The nature and impact of stereotyping
  • The value of difference
  • Cross-cultural communication
  • Case studies including analysis and development of strategies to address real challenges
  • Envisioning elements of culturally competent programs and service delivery
  • Design of a needs assessment and outreach plan to work toward cultural competency.
  • It is the responsibility of the host agency to reproduce and disseminate participant manuals for each participant and to cover site costs and refreshments.
