A guide for fencers and enthusiasts
My name is Jeremy Sprouse. I posted this page to share information about fencing to anyone interested.
I have been fencing about 10 years and love it! I am currently fencing in Raton, NM Previously I fenced at the Mile High Fencing Club in Denver, CO and the Adams State College Fencing Club in Alamosa, CO. I am currenlty focusing on foil, but I do all forms of fencing: foil, epee, sabre, SCA, and whatever else I find out about.
I try to only put the best content and links on my site. I work on the site sporadically. If you have any suggestions or comments please contact me.
Beginning Foil Fencing: Concepts and Terms by David Glasser
Tournament Strategy by Maximo J. Callao Ph.D.
Books on Fencing
On Fencing by Aldo Nadi -- I consider this to be the best manual on fencing. It is mainly a foil book, but it's concepts can be applied to any form of fencing. It has techniques no other book has. See excerpts
The Science of Fencing: A Comprehensive Training Manual for Master and Student: Including Lesson Plans for Foil, Sabre and Epee Instruction by William M. Gaugler -- This is another great book on fencing. It was written by one of Aldo Nadi's students and is meant to be used as an introduction and companion book to Aldo Nadi's On Fencing.
The Duel: A History by Robert Baldick
-- This is a good book to look at if you want to learn more about the history and origins of fencing. It describes a lot of duels some of which are very bizarre and/or hilarious.
The Fencing Master by Arturo Perez-Reverte, Margaret Jull Costa (Translator) -- This is a novel I'm currently reading. It was written by a fencer (I think) and has a murder-mystery plot. It does a good job of describing the honor and pride of fencing.
Lock up you silver... by Jeff O'Brien
An Alternative View Of Tournament Strategy by The Mongoose
The Real Fencing Glossary by Brad Fox
The Canonical Fencing Lightbulb Jokes Collection
Find more fencing humor at Fencing Sucks.
Informational:
Advance Lunge -- This is a great website created by three young fencers.
Fencing.net -- This is a good website with fencing information, training tips, and lots of links.
United States Fencing Association
American Fencing Magazine -- Has lots of great information. I especially like their poetry section.
Equipment:
Fence Smart Has a great website! Great prices and has online ordering.
The Fencing Post -- Gives a 20% discount to email orders. They also have great sales from time to time.
Blade Fencing -- Has a great selection, high quality equipment, and a great website. The prices are on the higher side, however, they often have great sales. Has online ordering.
Favero Electronic Design -- If your club can't afford scoring equipment, you can buy personal scoring devices here for around $30.00.
Fencing Footage -- Sells videos of World Championships, Olympics, ect... I haven't purchased anything from them yet, but I plan to.
