This is the Finnish and Swedish side of my family tree. My Great Great Grandparents came to America around the mid-1860's and settled in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. They worked in the Copper Mines. (If any one wants a great Pasty recipe, I've got one!) At one time, they traveled to Montana to work in the Copper Mines, but made the long trip back to the U.P. of Michigan.
Matti Anti HONKAKOSKI was born on December 18, 1863 in Oulu, Finland. He died on March 6, 1931 and is buried in the Jacobsville, MI cemetery. He married Maria LEUENIEMI on September 15, 1888 in Franklin, Houghton, MI. She was born around 1861 and died on March 19, 1903 at childbirth. She and the baby are buried together in Jacobsville, MI. The Honkakoski name was later shortened to Koski.
They had 12 children:
Jennie was born on May 29, 1889 on Portage Entry, (Island) MI and died in October 1944. She is buried in Greenland, MI. She married first Jacob KARPINEN and second Alarik PIKKARAINEN.
Hilma Aliina was born on May 29, 1890 on Portage Entry, (Island)MI. She died on September 3, 1967 and is buried in Chassell, MI. She married first Jacob KRIIKKU on May 14, 1910 in Hancock, MI. Jacob was born on March 22, 1889 in Ylistaro, Finland and died on August 16, 1921. (These are my Great Grandparents and more about them below). She married second Edward SIIVOLA on September 26, 1929 in Chassell, MI. Edward was born on September 26, 1890 in Finland. He died on February 1, 1962.
Ida Marie was born on May 30, 1891 on Portage Entry, (Island) MI and died on December 6, 1966. She is buried in Pequaming, MI. She married Herman HONKALA on January 10, 1914 in Hancock, MI.
John Emil was born on September 1, 1892 on Portage Entry (Island) and died on January 21, 1972. He is buried in Chassell, MI.
Johanna Matilda was born on December 5, 1893 in Portage Entry, MI and died on July 19, 1984. She married George HAUSER on June 28, 1923 in Ann Arbor, MI.
Charles was born on May 10, 1894 in Portage Entry, MI and died on January 29, 1930. He is buried in Chassell, MI.
Helmi Augusta was born on September 6, 1896 in Portage Entry, MI and died on April 7, 1986. She is buried in Chassell, MI.
Waino Jalmer was born on September 18, 1897 in Portage Entry, MI and died on November 9, 1936. He is buried in Chassell, MI. He married Thelma Eliisa SAARI on July 13, 1946 in Hancock, MI.
Anna Aurora was born on February 9, 1899 in Portage Entry, MI. She died when she was 2 or 3 and is buried in Jacobsville, MI.
Fannie Senya was born on March 2, 1900 in Portage Entry, MI and died in October 1973. She is buried in Chicago, IL. She married first Ted NUISL and second Ed ROSS.
Mayme Olga was born on September 27, 1901 and she died when she was 2 years old. She is buried in Jacobsville, MI.
Matti was born on March 19, 1903 and died at birth with his mother. Both are buried in Jacobsville, MI.
Hilma Aliina HONKAKOSKI married Jacob KRIIKKU on May 4, 1910 in Hancock, MI. Jacob was born on March 22, 1889 in Ylistaro, Finland. He died on August 16, 1921 and is buried in Chassell, MI. Jacobs father was John KRIIKKU and mother was Sonia SYRJA.
The had the following children:
Waino Elmer was born on February 16, 1911 in Pequaming, MI and died on December 9, 1979. He married Helen Wilhelmina KEIKKALA on June 8, 1940 in Napoleon, Henry County, OH. Helen was born on March 29, 1913 and she died on May 23, 1978. They are both buried in Calumet, MI.
Julia Aliina was born on June 15, 1912 in Pequaming, MI and died on February 28, 1919 and is buried in Liminga, MI.
Elma Maria was born on August 12, 1914. She married William Toivo WUORI on September 30, 1933 in Franklin Township, MI.
Edward Jacob was born on May 15, 1916 in Pequaming, MI and died on January 21, 1971 and is buried at the Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Detroit, MI. He married Elsie Bertha NOLLET on July 19, 1947.
