There was an interesting article about cheongsam in New York Times by a Chinese-American woman who wrote about the time her mother asked her to wear a cheongsam for a cultural event in San Francisco in the 1960s.
She was a thoroughly Americanized teenager at the time, and resisted her mother's request at first, but eventually gave in. She didn't like the experience one bit.
