The High Plains Drifters Volkssport Club of Colorado Springs has the honor or being the host walking club for Wednesday morning’s, June 25th, 2003 AVA Convention event. The walk will take place at the historic and scenic Turkey Creek Recreation Area (TCRA). Elevation at the ranch is approximately 5,800 feet above sea level. This U.S. Army recreation area is an important part of Fort Carson’s recreational opportunities and is located 15 miles southwest of the Convention Headquarters Hotel.

The Start/Finish Area will be located at the OK Corral picnic shelter. This is one of the newer structures in the central area of the TCRA. Historically, the ranch goes back more than 100 years. It was started in 1882, and was used for sheep and cattle ranching. Spencer Penrose, one of the founding luminaries of Colorado Springs, purchased the ranch in 1912. He began collecting animals and by 1919 had a variety of animals including bears, coyotes, elk and deer at the ranch. In 1926, Mr Penrose moved some of his more exotic animals to what is now the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo and they formed the nucleus of the zoo’s first exhibits. The Spanish Revival Style Main House was completed in 1913, and served as the center of activity at the ranch. Today, it continues to serve as a location for weddings, reunions, recreation and other gatherings. Mr Penrose maintained control of the ranch until his death in 1939. The ranch was owned by a succession of private owners from 1944 to 1964. Fort Carson purchased the bulk of Turkey Creek Ranch in 1964 and 1965. U.S. Army Fort Carson has since incorporated picnic tables, grills, and shelters into the ‘park’ and added several other amenities throughout the ranch property. Today, TCRA is open year-round and used by the Department of the Army.

The 10-Km trail includes the 5-Km trail route and is situated mainly north and east of the start/finish shelter. The trail routes are on dirt pathways and gravel roads. One short hill, at the halfway point of the route, will challenge the 10-Km participants. Large-wheeled strollers should have no problem completing the route except for this hill. TCRA is one of Fort Carson’s scenic treasures and you will view meadows, trees, bushes, wildlife and mountains as you enjoy either distance. Athletic walking or running shoes are appropriate footwear for this event. Hiking boots are recommended for those that require extra ankle support on uneven surfaces. A walking stick for balance is always a good choice. Sunscreen, sunglasses, hats and water are a must.  Leashed pets are welcome on the trails

Fort Carson’s Turkey Creek Recreation Area, the High Plains Drifters, and Rambling the Rockies await your arrival and hope to see you at the convention.
