Castle Rock, Colorado

The Rocky Mountain Wanderers Volkssport Club of Denver has the honor of being the host walking club for the 2003 AVA Convention walk in Castle Rock, on Friday, June 27, 2003. Castle Rock is located 20 minutes south of Denver at an altitude of 6,202 feet.

Castle Rock is named for its can’t-miss rock outcropping, which resembles a European castle. The large rock standing like a sentinel above the town, is a cap rock that resisted erosion during the time Colorado was a receding ocean.

Castle Rock is a friendly town that has survived slow changing economies, flash floods in 1964, while managing to keep a small town atmosphere. Nearby, and with over 100 name-brand stores offering deep discounts, the Castle Rock Factory Shops are another draw. Just a few miles to the southeast is Castlewood Canyon State Park.

The 5 and 10-Km trails begin at the Event Center and Fair Grounds, and follow a river trail into the heart of the town. Entering town volksporters will pass by historical buildings, restaurants, and unique shops (feed stores, antique shops, art galleries, and a grain elevator).

After touring Main Street, 10-Km walkers follow a trail to the “Rock,” while 5-Km walkers return to the Start/Finish via an interesting historical tour on the quiet side streets of Castle Rock. There are many large shade trees and points of interest along this route. Information on the historical buildings will be provided in the 5-Km walk instructions.

10-Km walkers continue to the base of the “Rock.” The route proceeds on a dirt perimeter trail through Rock Park, and onto a greenway path, taking walkers through a small neighborhood, across an open area, and as the trail wanders up (only slightly) to the Community Center, the view gets even better. The trail meanders, and soon enters the older part of town again, where walkers pass by several buildings listed on the National Historical Register.

The hills may cause volkssporters some shortness of breath; however by slowing the pace and enjoying the scenery, all will find this to be a very enjoyable walk. Athletic shoes are considered appropriate footwear for this walk. Daytime temperatures can become quite warm in mid-June, sunscreen, sunglasses, hats and carrying water are advisable.

The City of Castle Rock, the Rocky Mountain Wanderers, and Rambling the Rockies await your arrival and hope to see you at the convention.

For the more adventurous hearts, after the walk, drive back to Rock Park on Front Street and follow the dirt trail that leads up to the base of the Rock. The trail has several steps toward the top, but the spectacular 360-degree view from the top is worth the effort. There is a park bench under the edge of the Rock, which makes a great resting and viewing place.
