• Mary Markey Ballard's father, William, pioneered in southern Illinois and moved north to Belvidere to work. He married in Belvidere then settled in Sycamore. She had a brother in Kansas and a sister in Virginia.
  

• Edward Ballard came to America around 1853 with his mother's second husband and after a brief stay in Rome, New York, they moved on to Belvidere, Boone Co., IL. He enlisted in Co. "C" 142 IL Inf. Vols. on 11 May 1864. The One Hundred and Fourty-second Illinois was organized at Freeport, IL, by Colonel Rollin V. Ankney as a Battalion of eight companies and ordered to Camp Butler, IL, where two companies were added. Edward was mustered in for 100 days on 18 Jun 1864 with no fewer than 30 of his fellow townsmen, and the rest of the regiment. On the 21st of June 1864, the Regiment moved for Memphis, via Cairo and the Mississippi River, they arrived on the 24th. On the 26th, they moved to White's Station, 11 miles from Memphis, on the Memphis and Charleston Railroad, where it was assigned to guarding the railroad. The Regiment was mustered out of the United States military service on 26 Oct 1864, at Chicago, IL.
  After the war Edward Ballard married and started his family. He was a marble cutter by trade at which he was employed for many years, but failing health made it necessary for him to give it up. He was then employed by the city, as janitor of the Universalist Church and of the public schools for the remainder of his life.
