Dave Hughes interview
This interview was sent to Nicole Deena who passed it on the Dave, who answered it and returned
it to Nic, who in turn returned it to myself. I finally got it back on October 17 2000.
What was it like starting out your stand up career in WA?
good, small comedy room, but some other established comedians were negative, as I didn't exactly follow the normal path, as I was always doing new material.
What was the transition like from Perth to Melbourne?
Hard in a year and a half in Perth I'd become a headline act, in my own mind anyway, but I had to start again in Melbourne, looking back on it, it actually wasn't that hard.
What made you decide to be a comedian in the first place?
I thought I was funny.
Describe your best ever gig.
Hard to pick just one. cos ive had so many.
Where is your favourite place to perform?
I like the Espy in Stkilda.
How did you feel when Australia won the comedy cup knowing you helped them win?
It was rigged. they had to redo an ending of one of the shows cos the judges couldn't count and had ended up giving the Pommies a higher score than us.
How did you feel when you lost the debate "Science should get out of our genes"?
I didn't care, I'd got a laugh and that was all that I cared about.
What do you like most about my dear friend Nicole Deena?
Her ability to be funny
Did you imagine that you were going to get sold out audiences for Super Toasty Loaf" at this year's Melbourne Comedy Festival?
the year before had been good as well. so I thought it would go okay, though I was rapt at how many people came.
How long did it take you to write that show?
I'm doing regualar bit's on MMM around the network, a lot of the live show came from those bits having to be funny twice a week on radio is a good incentive to come up with funny stuff, so it probably took six months of regular thought.
What was it like to be a guest on Rove last year?
I've been on a number of shows, being on rove was quite relaxing in comparison cos I know all the guys from doing the rooms over the years.
What would you do if you heard another comedian use your material on stage?
Point it out to him or her and gently remind them that It's not a good idea, although some ideas people may come upon independantly so you've got to be careful before you accuse someone of stealing.
What is the most important thing to you?
No idea.
What did you enjoy most about being a guest on Good News Week?
Being part of team and being appreciated, as I had been endeavouring to get on the show for a few years.
Dislike most?
That the show got cancelled a couple of weeks after I'd been on for the first time.
Is there anything else you'd like to say?
No.
