Results from the 2001 Liberty January Tournament

The Liberty January Tournament took place on 20 January 2001 at Liberty High School in Colorado Springs. The time control was G/15, and there was both a USCF quick rated section and a nonrated section. Larry Wutt organized this event on behalf of Southern Colorado Chess. The tournament directors were Dean Brown and Roy Heath.

The 17 player quick rated section utilized an 8 round double Swiss format, i.e., each participant played White and Black against four different opponents chosen by Swiss System rules. Buck Buchanan scored 7.5 out of 8.0 to win the $30 first prize, while Ken Dail earned the $20 second prize with 6.0 points, and Steve Sparks scored 5.0 to capture the $15 U1400 prize. Andrew Gibson and Fred Hope each tallied 4.0 points to split the U1100 prize of $10.

The 4 player nonrated section ran as a double round robin. William Garcia scored 5.0 out of 6.0 to win the $12 first prize. With 4.0 points, Jeff Case took home the second prize of $8.
