Taking Home and Office On The Road... With Electricity! A number of coincidental and unrelated factors came to bear recently on my life-- or have even snuck up on me-- facilitating my ultimate decision to travel, taking my work with me. Like many others, I have made the commitment to becoming a fulltiming RVer. Reasons were as numerous as they were unexpected. Changes in personal life. Change in business direction. A desire to travel. Desire to minimize monthly expenses. I sort of realized that I was maintaining a lifestyle based upon several years ago, when I was a single father getting my daughter through college. Alone now, some mid-life re-evaluation gave rise to innovative and very appropriate ideas for a new lifestyle. conveniences of my former day-to-day life, became the objective. The principal reason I am maintaining this site is to keep my own view of the overall project organized and with all of the varied aspects in their relative perspectives. Secondarily, I want to share with friends and family, most of which think I'm crazy, that there really is some rational plan to what I'm doing in becoming a fulltimer. This site is the story of how a mobile home/office was developed, over the course of about six months, for my particular application and new lifestyle. Although this site is highly specific to my application, it may be of interest to others wishing to take their work or "office" with them on the road. If others who are involved in RVing can gain anything from my experience, they are welcome to anything helpful here. Conversely, I would welcome any input from others who have done similar things, particularly in the area of power generation. For a quick look at what I have, where I live and work everyday now, see Around the House. Those who might be interested in or are anticipating buying an older RV as a "fixer upper" may have interest in the sections on Selection, Fixup and Appliances. For a look at what I have for a tow vehicle and what considerations went into its selection, see Towing. For interior views of the mobile office and computer animation facility built into the RV pictured, see Office. My current line of work involves computer modeling of scenes, objects and images for video and/or film production. For additional information, see the heading My Work. To be successful, I need to support my video production equipment with clean power, consisting of several computers and associated audio and video equipment. See Equipment for specifics.
I have described how I handle sending and receiving email and how I've arranged for receiving US mail while on the road in the sections Internet and US Mail. My provisions for storage of personal items not taken on the road are covered in the section Storage. I am not an alarmist and hope for the best, come 2000. But if there is a problem, its comforting to know I won't need to be reliant on "grid power". I have worked with microprocessors and microcode for twenty years, in one way or another. I understand the problem in some depth and therefore, cannot ignore it. Those who have an interest in the survivalist aspects of having an RV or who are interested in cooperative power or Y2K issues, see the sections MicroGrids and Y2K. Some of what I consider to be necessary tools for self sufficiency on the road are shown in the section on Tools. Many of the good people, who have helped me in bringing this mobile facility to fruition, are represented on the Links page. Please visit them there. Many thanks to Angelfire! and computer facilities located in the RV shown here. For more information on our internet services, see: |
