Waterford United . . . 3; Cobh Ramblers . . . 0
Four points from a possible six in this back-to -back encounter with Cobh
Ramblers could have been better but it still put the Blues back in contention
for a promotion place and ended Ramblers hopes of getting back into the
Premier Division.
This game was over before latecomers had found their seats in the Sports
Centre stand. It all commenced, when the game was only two minutes old
and, suddenly, John Power spotted lack of cover on the right and sent
Donal Golden away down the flank. Goalkeeper Michael Devine could
only parry Golden's opening shot and the ball broke to Colin Fanning, who
had no difficulty in netting past the helpless keeper for the opener.
The home side almost went two up in the fourth minute but the keeper
brought off a close-range save from Darren Browne. However, there was
little he could do in the sixth minute, when John Power and Paul Scully
combined to create another opening for Darren Browne to score from ten
yards.
To be fair, Cobh Ramblers were somewhat lucky to survive until 15
minutes from the end of the game without conceding further scores because
they never looked comfortable against the onslaughts of the home side and
it was practically inevitable that Waterford United would add to their
total
before the final whistle. And,15 minutes from the end, Denis Golden, who
had contributed in style to this victory, duly obliged, when he pounced
on a
through ball by Alan Reynolds and caught keeper Devine off his line with
a
curling delivery to the Bet at the far post.
