BRAY WANDERERS marched
back to the top of the First Division as they swept aside the feeble challenge
of outclassed Cobh Ramblers at the Carlisle Grounds on Saturday night.
Cobh, now back in
second place, were made to look a pedestrian outfit as the FAI Cup holders
produced the best performance of the season.
Kieran “Tarzan”
O’Brien gave Bray the lead with a penalty after six minutes when he was
brought down by Willie Byrne in the box. A move started down the right
by Colm Tresson five minutes later allowed Jason Byrne to produce a glorious
ball across midfield. Ciaran Ryan’s volley gave keeper John Donegan no
chance.
Both Donal Golden
and Ciaran Dalton came close to reducing the leeway for Cobh. But the match
was effectively over as a contest just one minute after the interval when
Maurice Farrells effort from the edge of the box took a wicked deflection
for Bray’s third goal.
The seasiders then
stretched their lead in 66 minutes when a Farrell free on the left was
brilliantly volleyed home by Byrne from ten yards giving Donegal no chance.
To complete Cobh’s night of misery, O’Brien shot home his second and Bray’s
fifth goal with a magnificently struck free kick from 25 yards in the 67th
minute of the game.
