Longford secured passage to the Premier Division with a 2-0 win over
Cobh Ramblers on Saturday night, and while manager Steve Kenny enjoyed
the moment he was refusing to get carried away with the emotion of the
occasion.
“The hard work starts now for us. We have gained promotion, but there
is even more work ahead of us if we are to stay up.”
Longford had Saturday night’s match all but wrapped up after only 15
minutes after snatching two early goals, and with that cushion intact they
were content to play out the rest of the match in a canter. A mere four
minutes had gone when a fiercely driven free kick from Wesley Byrne cannoned
back into play off the upright and Keith O’Connor tapped the rebound home.
O’Connor turned provider on 15 minutes when he set up Byrne for his
goal and a party atmosphere overtook St Colman’s Park as the Longford supporters
began celebrating.
“I am absolutely delighted,” said Kenny. “It is going to be great to
have the likes of Cork City and Shelbourne travel to the midlands for the
first time and our supporters deserve it.”
