McCarthy strike gives Limerick points
A MAGNIFICENT strike by Derek McCarthy gave Limerick an overdue win when they beat Cobh Ramblers at Hogan Park.
The goal came after 54 minutes following a pass by Oran Weldrick and McCarthy hit a thundering half volley which flew passed John Donegan and in off the woodwork. It was McCarthy’s fifth goal of the season and it gave Limerick their first win since December 18 and their fourth in the League campaign.
Limerick were the better side in the first half but they almost got off to a disastrous start. Inside 30 seconds Willie Bruton found himself clear for Cobh but the Limerick goalkeeper Jimmy Fyffe came off his line and made a crucial save with his feet.
After that, Limerick took control and Gareth Ryan who was skipper on the night went close after 14 minutes when he chipped just over and four minutes later he again went close.
A delightful move by Bobby Ryan deserved a Limerick goal after 40 minutes. He chipped a defender and then regained possession but failed to lob keeper John Donegan who just on half time made a superb save from a cracking free by Tommy Lynch. Donegan dived to his right and managed to push the ball out for a corner.
Cobh suffered a blow after 39 minutes when Liam O’Connor had to retire injured and was replaced by Barry Hastings.
