Frantic
first half at 'Mels
A thrilling first
half, which produced four goals, was followed by a damp squib second 45
minutes at St Mel's Park. A slide-rule Donal Golden through ball
released Liam O'Connor to fire Cobh ahead after only 11 minutes, but Athlone
quickly got back into their stride and midfielder Colin Fortune struck
the woodwork before Peter Finn slotted home the equaliser on 25 minutes.
Athlone, still looking
for their first win in the First Division, were again caught square at
the back when Paul Coughlan pounced on an aimless long ball to score Cobh's
second on 35 minutes, but the home team were back on level terms again
six minutes later, Tony Izzi crossing the for Eamon Donohoe to score from
close range. In between, Izzi's back header rebounded from the crossbar
and Tom Silke's follow-up was bundled off the Cobh line.
