Chalkbrd_OAM_Counselor says, I have a
trivia question for you before we start.
Serving_A_Loving_God says, ok
jesusworker_99 says, ok
Chalkbrd_OAM_Counselor says, Anyone ever
watch the Beverly Hillbillies?
Wvstarwolf_OAM_Counselor says, yes
Serving_A_Loving_God says, I have love
that show
jesusworker_99 says, not really
Chalkbrd_OAM_Counselor says, What was
the uncle's name in that show?
jesusworker_99 says, jedd
Serving_A_Loving_God says, Jed
Chalkbrd_OAM_Counselor says, Right...now,
does anyone know what Jed is short for?
Serving_A_Loving_God says, Jedidiah?
jesusworker_99 says, jedodiach
Wvstarwolf_OAM_Counselor says, Jethro?
Chalkbrd_OAM_Counselor says, Close, Mary
Chalkbrd_OAM_Counselor says, Jedidiah
Chalkbrd_OAM_Counselor says, Tonight
we're going to read about someone named Jedidiah....well, mostly about his parents
tonight.
Chalkbrd_OAM_Counselor says, He had another
name.......anyone know it?
jesusworker_99 says, i got it
right and i don;t watch the show
jesusworker_99 says, joshua
Wvstarwolf_OAM_Counselor says, joshua
Chalkbrd_OAM_Counselor says, nope4
Chalkbrd_OAM_Counselor says, His other
name starts with an S
jesusworker_99 says, samsom
Wvstarwolf_OAM_Counselor says, Samson
Chalkbrd_OAM_Counselor says, And his
parents' initials are D and B
Serving_A_Loving_God says, Solomon
Chalkbrd_OAM_Counselor says, Marcie gets
the gold star!
Chalkbrd_OAM_Counselor says, Who are
D and B?
Wvstarwolf_OAM_Counselor says, David & Bathsheba
Serving_A_Loving_God says, David and Bathsheba
jesusworker_99 says, good work
marcie
Chalkbrd_OAM_Counselor says, Does anyone
know right off what the story of David and Bathsheba is?
Serving_A_Loving_God says, is thinking
Wvstarwolf_OAM_Counselor says, yes
jesusworker_99 says, bathsheba
is the one who gave her son to the temple
Chalkbrd_OAM_Counselor says, Let's turn
to 2 Samuel 11.
Chalkbrd_OAM_Counselor says, In the spring,
at the time when kings go off to war, David sent Joab out with the king's men
and the whole Israelite army. They destroyed the Ammonites and besieged Rabbah.
But David remained in Jerusalem.
jesusworker_99 says, there
Chalkbrd_OAM_Counselor says, What was
David doing while everyone else went off to war?
jesusworker_99 says, sleeping
Wvstarwolf_OAM_Counselor says, David stayed home
Chalkbrd_OAM_Counselor says, yes, he
stayed home...he didn't go to war but sent his army out under Joab instead.
Chalkbrd_OAM_Counselor says, This was
an unusual thing because this was just the time that kings went off to war,
and David was a king.
Chalkbrd_OAM_Counselor says, He had chosen,
however, to stay home.
Chalkbrd_OAM_Counselor says, We are not
told why, but we have to wonder what it was that kept him from leading his troups
to war.
Chalkbrd_OAM_Counselor says, Keep that
in the back of your mind as we go on.
Chalkbrd_OAM_Counselor says, One evening
David got up from his bed and walked around on the roof of the palace. From
the roof he saw a woman bathing. The woman was very beautiful, 3 and David sent
someone to find out about her.
jesusworker_99 says, maybe he
was tired
Chalkbrd_OAM_Counselor says, Now, we
are told early in Samuel that David was fairly good-looking....
Chalkbrd_OAM_Counselor says, And we are
also told of the hundreds of wives he ended up having.
april_h60 is away (Auto-Away)
Chalkbrd_OAM_Counselor says, It seems
that David had a weakness.
Serving_A_Loving_God says, women
Chalkbrd_OAM_Counselor says, yep
jesusworker_99 says, ladies
Chalkbrd_OAM_Counselor says, And one
night, he went up to the roof, which was pretty common in those days because
it was a way of enjoying the cool night air.
Chalkbrd_OAM_Counselor says, He looked
over and he saw a woman bathing.
Chalkbrd_OAM_Counselor says, This was
the moment of temptation for him.
Chalkbrd_OAM_Counselor says, Was his
glancing around and seeing this woman bathing a sin on his part?
Serving_A_Loving_God says, no
jesusworker_99 says, no
Wvstarwolf_OAM_Counselor says, no not yet
Chalkbrd_OAM_Counselor says, Right, it
was merely a temptation that God allowed to be placed before him.
Chalkbrd_OAM_Counselor says, Even though
David had this weakness for women, could he have resisted this temptation?
Serving_A_Loving_God says, yes
Wvstarwolf_OAM_Counselor says, yes
jesusworker_99 says, yes
Chalkbrd_OAM_Counselor says, But instead
of resisting, he sent someone to find out about her.
Chalkbrd_OAM_Counselor says, Here is
something you might find interesting.
Serving_A_Loving_God says, listens
Wvstarwolf_OAM_Counselor listens.
jesusworker_99 listens.
Chalkbrd_OAM_Counselor says, In the Old
Testament, only a man could instigate a divorce.
Chalkbrd_OAM_Counselor says, Women were
not allowed to do so.
Wvstarwolf_OAM_Counselor says, right
Chalkbrd_OAM_Counselor says, The reason
for this is that marriage was originally to be a type for us to see Jesus' relationship
with the Church.
Chalkbrd_OAM_Counselor says, And once
we become His bride, we cannot ever divorce Him.
Chalkbrd_OAM_Counselor says, He is with
us forever.
Chalkbrd_OAM_Counselor says, He is the
only one who could send us away, but He has made a promise not to do so.
Wvstarwolf_OAM_Counselor says, Amen
Chalkbrd_OAM_Counselor says, Have you
ever wondered about the story of the woman caught in adultery?
Chalkbrd_OAM_Counselor says, Like, so,
if she was caught in the act, where was the guy?
jesusworker_99 says, yeah
Chalkbrd_OAM_Counselor says, Why wasn't
he being stoned as well?
Serving_A_Loving_God says, such double
standards it seems like
Chalkbrd_OAM_Counselor says, The reason
was because as long as the woman was not married, the man was not commiting
adultery if he had sex with her.
Chalkbrd_OAM_Counselor says, He would
just marry her.
Chalkbrd_OAM_Counselor says, And if down
the line he found another woman he wanted.....
Chalkbrd_OAM_Counselor says, He'd just
marry her too.
Chalkbrd_OAM_Counselor says, In fact,
with the Jewish tradition, sleeping with a woman was all it took to marry her.
Chalkbrd_OAM_Counselor says, The couple
was officially married after having sex.
Chalkbrd_OAM_Counselor says, But if the
woman was married, well, that was a completely different ball game.
Chalkbrd_OAM_Counselor says, The man
said, "Isn't this Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam and the wife of Uriah
the Hittite?"
Chalkbrd_OAM_Counselor says, David had
a temptation......
Chalkbrd_OAM_Counselor says, If she would
have been unmarried, it would not have been wrong for him to take her as his
wife.
Chalkbrd_OAM_Counselor says, But he was
told that indeed, she WAS married, to Uriah.
Chalkbrd_OAM_Counselor says, Now, hold
your finger in 2 Samuel and go to 1 Corinthians 10:13.
Chalkbrd_OAM_Counselor says, 1 Corinthians
10:13, everyone there?
jesusworker_99 says, yes
Chalkbrd_OAM_Counselor says, No temptation
has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not
let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will
also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it.
Chalkbrd_OAM_Counselor says, When David
was told that Bathsheba was married to Uriah, this was the "way out"
God was providing him with.
Chalkbrd_OAM_Counselor says, In
our own lives, when we are tempted, God ALWAYS provides a way out......we just
don't like to take it.
Chalkbrd_OAM_Counselor says, We're a
lot like David in this respect.
jesusworker_99 says, amen
Serving_A_Loving_God says, yes
Chalkbrd_OAM_Counselor says, So, David
had the temptation of seeing her and instead of turning from it, he continued
on....asking about her.
Chalkbrd_OAM_Counselor says, Now you
can go back to 2 Samuel 11.
Chalkbrd_OAM_Counselor says, Then David
sent messengers to get her.
Chalkbrd_OAM_Counselor says, God gave
David a way of getting out of this temptation, but he didn't take it...instead,
he went the next step.
Chalkbrd_OAM_Counselor says, She came
to him, and he slept with her. (She had purified herself from her uncleanness.)
Then she went back home.
Chalkbrd_OAM_Counselor says, Did David
know what he was doing was wrong?
Wvstarwolf_OAM_Counselor says, yes
jesusworker_99 says, yes
Chalkbrd_OAM_Counselor says, But did
he do it anyway?
Serving_A_Loving_God says, yes he sure
did
jesusworker_99 says, yes
Chalkbrd_OAM_Counselor says, Did God
know what David had done?
jesusworker_99 says, yes
Wvstarwolf_OAM_Counselor says, yes
Chalkbrd_OAM_Counselor says, The
woman conceived and sent word to David, saying, "I am pregnant."
Chalkbrd_OAM_Counselor says, Now, David
had a choice.....his sin had been exposed.
Chalkbrd_OAM_Counselor says, He could
stand up and take responsibility for his sin.....
Chalkbrd_OAM_Counselor says, Or he could
try to find a way to cover it up.
Chalkbrd_OAM_Counselor says, Which did
he choose?
jesusworker_99 says, coveer it
up
Chalkbrd_OAM_Counselor says, So David
sent this word to Joab: "Send me Uriah the Hittite." And Joab sent
him to David.
Wvstarwolf_OAM_Counselor says, to cover it up
Chalkbrd_OAM_Counselor says, When Uriah
came to him, David asked him how Joab was, how the soldiers were and how the
war was going. 8 Then David said to Uriah, "Go down to your house and wash
your feet."
Chalkbrd_OAM_Counselor says, Why did
David want Uriah to go to his house?
jesusworker_99 says, to
wash his feet
Chalkbrd_OAM_Counselor says, well, uh....not
exactly, Mary
Chalkbrd_OAM_Counselor says, David figured
that if Uriah would go home, naturally, he would sleep with his wife....
Chalkbrd_OAM_Counselor says, And if he
slept with his wife, and then she was pregnant, people would not think anything
of it.
Serving_A_Loving_God says, listening
Chalkbrd_OAM_Counselor says, I mean,
what soldier who has been away from home for a couple of months wouldn't want
to spend the night with his wife?
Wvstarwolf_OAM_Counselor says, all of them
Chalkbrd_OAM_Counselor says, But Uriah
was different.
Chalkbrd_OAM_Counselor says, So Uriah
left the palace, and a gift from the king was sent after him. 9 But Uriah slept
at the entrance to the palace with all his master's servants and did not go
down to his house.
Chalkbrd_OAM_Counselor says, David wasn't
happy...his plan hadn't worked.
Chalkbrd_OAM_Counselor says, So, he brought
Uriah in before him..... "When David was told, "Uriah did not go home,"
he asked him, "Haven't you just come from a distance? Why didn't you go
home?"
Chalkbrd_OAM_Counselor says, Uriah said
to David, "The ark and Israel and Judah are staying in tents, and my master
Joab and my lord's men are camped in the open fields. How could I go to my house
to eat and drink and lie with my wife? As surely as you live, I will not do
such a thing!"
Chalkbrd_OAM_Counselor says, David had
run smack dab into a man of integrity.
Chalkbrd_OAM_Counselor says, Uriah did
not want to be in luxury while everyone else was in hardship....he saw no reason
that he should be specially treated.
Chalkbrd_OAM_Counselor says, Little did
he know, though, that this decision of his signed his death warrant.
Chalkbrd_OAM_Counselor says, David stepped
up the plan.
Chalkbrd_OAM_Counselor says, Then David
said to him, "Stay here one more day, and tomorrow I will send you back."
So Uriah remained in Jerusalem that day and the next. 13 At David's invitation,
he ate and drank with him, and David made him drunk. But in the evening Uriah
went out to sleep on his mat among his master's servants; he did not go home.
Chalkbrd_OAM_Counselor says, David figured
surely if he got him drunk THEN Uriah would go home....but he didn't.
Chalkbrd_OAM_Counselor says, David must
have spent all night thinking up a new plan and in the morning, he did it.....
Chalkbrd_OAM_Counselor says, In the morning
David wrote a letter to Joab and sent it with Uriah. 15 In it he wrote, "Put
Uriah in the front line where the fighting is fiercest. Then withdraw from him
so he will be struck down and die."
Chalkbrd_OAM_Counselor says, David decided
if Uriah wouldn't do things his way, then he would just have him killed.
Chalkbrd_OAM_Counselor says, So while
Joab had the city under siege, he put Uriah at a place where he knew the strongest
defenders were. 17 When the men of the city came out and fought against Joab,
some of the men in David's army fell; moreover, Uriah the Hittite died.
Chalkbrd_OAM_Counselor says, It was kind
of mean of David too because he had Uriah himself take his own death warrant
and deliver it to Joab.
Chalkbrd_OAM_Counselor says, What a bummer!
jesusworker_99 says, amen\
Chalkbrd_OAM_Counselor says, Joab sent
David a full account of the battle. 19 He instructed the messenger: "When
you have finished giving the king this account of the battle, 20 the king's
anger may flare up, and he may ask you, `Why did you get so close to the city
to fight? Didn't you know they would shoot arrows from the wall?
Wvstarwolf_OAM_Counselor says, sure was Deb
Chalkbrd_OAM_Counselor says, Who killed
Abimelech son of Jerub-Besheth? Didn't a woman throw an upper millstone on him
from the wall, so that he died in Thebez? Why did you get so close to the wall?'
If he asks you this, then say to him, `Also, your servant Uriah the Hittite
is dead.' "
Chalkbrd_OAM_Counselor says, Joab figured
that David would be furious about the tactical manuever....until he was told
of Uriah's death.
Chalkbrd_OAM_Counselor says, The messenger
set out, and when he arrived he told David everything Joab had sent him to say.
23 The messenger said to David, "The men overpowered us and came out against
us in the open, but we drove them back to the entrance to the city gate.
Chalkbrd_OAM_Counselor says, Then the
archers shot arrows at your servants from the wall, and some of the king's men
died. Moreover, your servant Uriah the Hittite is dead."
Chalkbrd_OAM_Counselor says, Instead
of being furious, David was pretty calm about it all.....
Chalkbrd_OAM_Counselor says, David
told the messenger, "Say this to Joab: `Don't let this upset you; the sword
devours one as well as another. Press the attack against the city and destroy
it.' Say this to encourage Joab."
Chalkbrd_OAM_Counselor says, When Uriah's
wife heard that her husband was dead, she mourned for him. 27 After the time
of mourning was over, David had her brought to his house, and she became his
wife and bore him a son. But the thing David had done displeased the LORD.
Chalkbrd_OAM_Counselor says, I think
even more than David's sin of adultery, God was displeased with his coverup
that ended up killing Uriah.
Serving_A_Loving_God says, agrees with
Deb
Chalkbrd_OAM_Counselor says, David was
just like so many of us.....he was more concerned about his "appearance"
to others, than to his heart being right with God.
jesusworker_99 says, amen
Chalkbrd_OAM_Counselor says, David was
being dishonest with himself and with his entire country.
Chalkbrd_OAM_Counselor says, He had placed
his own coverup above the life of an innocent man, one of his subjects that
he was sworn to protect.
Wvstarwolf_OAM_Counselor says, Amen Deb
Chalkbrd_OAM_Counselor says, As the story
unfolds, which we won't take time to go into detail with, but I recommend you
read it, God sent Nathan to expose David's sin.
Chalkbrd_OAM_Counselor says, David did
repent of his sin.....but the consequences of what he did continued on throughout
his children.
Chalkbrd_OAM_Counselor says, David did
love Bathsheba...even to the end of his life...but the child they conceived
on that night died.
Chalkbrd_OAM_Counselor says, David married
her and they had another child.....
Chalkbrd_OAM_Counselor says, Solomon,
whom the Lord loved....and that is what Jedidiah means. Loved by the Lord.
Chalkbrd_OAM_Counselor says, Even though
David had sinned against his people, against Uriah, against Bathsheba and against
God, God forgave him.
Chalkbrd_OAM_Counselor says, But sometimes
we still have to live with the consequences of our sins.
Wvstarwolf_OAM_Counselor says, guilt!!!!!!!!!!!
Serving_A_Loving_God says, most always
we do
Chalkbrd_OAM_Counselor says, God took
this mistake of David and Bathsheba's and turned it into good, though....He
made Solomon into the greatest king who ever lived.
jesusworker_99 says, ameen
Chalkbrd_OAM_Counselor says, God may
not remove the consequences, but He will always work things out for our ultimate
good.
jesusworker_99 says, AMEN
Wvstarwolf_OAM_Counselor says, and God won't stop the sin of other people either
Chalkbrd_OAM_Counselor says, No, He doesn't.
Chalkbrd_OAM_Counselor says, God gave
David everything he needed to keep from committing that sin, but David refused
to take God's way out.
denisejc_32 says, that is part of what makes him a fair God
Wvstarwolf_OAM_Counselor says, Amen Denise
Chalkbrd_OAM_Counselor says, We are all
like David, committing sins, even though God gives us a clear way out......
jesusworker_99 says, AMEAN
Chalkbrd_OAM_Counselor says, And we all
have a choice when we do....
Chalkbrd_OAM_Counselor says, Will we
confess our sin or will we get ourselves even more trapped by trying to cover
it up?
Chalkbrd_OAM_Counselor says, Will we
keep digging that hole deeper and deeper or will we clear the air by confessing
our sins to God and to those we have offended?
Chalkbrd_OAM_Counselor says, David should
have confessed his sin when he first did it....but in trying to cover it up,
he took Uriah's life.
Chalkbrd_OAM_Counselor says, This is
what God was displeased with in David.
Chalkbrd_OAM_Counselor says, But God
did turn this around in David and used it to make him stronger in his faith
in God.
Chalkbrd_OAM_Counselor says, We need
to remember the story of David when we are tempted.
Chalkbrd_OAM_Counselor says, It can help
us to see how our sin can keep us from what God intended.
Chalkbrd_OAM_Counselor says, David's
kingdom ended up being split and his family was in a huge mess because of all
of this.
Chalkbrd_OAM_Counselor says, I
really suggest you read the whole story which is in the next few chapters.
It helps to drive home the point of how devastating the consequences of our
sin can be.
Wvstarwolf_OAM_Counselor says, good idea deb
Chalkbrd_OAM_Counselor says, But through
it all, remember Jedidiah....Loved by the Lord....God can make good come from
our mistakes.
Chalkbrd_OAM_Counselor says, ** the end
