O'Leary and Hughes

In reading the "..mary ann" book there was a reference which I took to mean to be about some vaudeville performers walking in unison doing fancy steps.

Here's the extract from the book: ".......Cassie and Mag were nicknamed "O'Leary and Hughes," after famous walkers of the time......."

I found a likely looking vaudeville web site and made an inquiry about O'Leary and Hughes'. This is the reply I received.

Sorry, we have no record of O'Leary & Hughes. However I can speculate. Cross country walking was a very popular sport in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Endurance walkers were popular and well known. The great silent clown, Harry Langdon, made a movie about this subject called "Tramp, Tramp, Tramp."   It is available on videotape -- FC/AVM
