Mahoney

Griffih's Valuation (1848-1864), was an evaluation of all leased lands in Ireland. It was done sort of after the fact, in that by 1848 most people had either died or left the country. With all the disasters that befell Irish records, it is the sole record for many.

In the 'Valuation' in County Cork there were 1706 "MAHONY" but only 19 "MAHONEY". Here are the 19.

I had hoped that I would find a 'Daniel', but not so. One name caught my eye, 'Ellen'. It is not a commonly found irish name and if you'll check the offsprings of Daniel Michael and Johannah, there are several 'Ellens'.

The item such as 'c823' is a geographic description of the location of the parish. They divided Ireland into 5 vertical strips, a,b,c,d & e. For the numeric portion, the lowest numbers are at top (north), the largest at the bottom (south). You can check from this which peple are near each other.

The system, called the 'Ordnance Survey', was undoubtebly, the product of a long session at the local pub.
