Brian David Kolowich was born in Detroit, Michigan, USA on November 30, 1955 to Raymund Frederick Kolowich and Marilynn Convery Kolowich. He spent his early years in Grosse Pointe Shores and Grosse Pointe Farms, Michigan, a lakefront suburb outside Detroit. He attended St. Paul Elementary School, followed by Georgetown Preparatory School (Wash. D.C. 1969-1970,)St. Paul High School (1971,) and Grosse Pointe South High School (1972-1973) While at both St. Paul and Grosse Pointe South, Kolowich earned All-State honors in swimming.


Kolowich attended Tulane University in New Orleans, earning a B.A. in American History. He was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity, and was chapter president his senior year. Upon his graduation in 1977, Kolowich located to Hilton Head Island, So. Carolina to begin a career in the resort and vacation real estate market. By 1978, he had risen to broker-in-charge of the Harbourtown Sales office of Lighthouse Realty. In 1979 Kolowich was named President of Development Realty, a division of Austin Construction Co., Hilton Head's premier custom home builder. In 1981, Kolowich became a partner in Sunbelt Associates, which developed and managed several island retail and office commercial properties.
In 1984, Kolowich returned to A.B. Freeman School of Business at Tulane University to pursue a Master's degree in business administration (M.B.A.) In June, 1985 he joined the Port of New Orleans as a marketing analyst. That August he married Kathryn Marie Pash of Lexington, Kentucky. Kolowich quickly rose through the ranks of the Port Trade Development Division, reaching the position of Director of Market Planning and Development in 1988. His responsibilities included development of targeted cargo pricing strategies, Port promotion and advertising, along with management and budget responsibility for the Port's worldwide network of trade development offices. He was in charge of targeting the port's wharf expansion program, and was a member of the team that pioneered the nation's first U.S. Customs automated cargo clearance system. The Port of New Orleans set tonnage and revenue records in 1988 and 1989, for which Kolowich and the Port's "best and brightest" managers received widespread accolades and recognition. At age 32, Kolowich was elected to the Board of Directors of the New Orleans Board of Trade, becoming the youngest board member in its 150 year history. In late 1989, Kolowich left the Port to become Director of Marketing at Guide Publishing Co., an 80-year old New Orleans maritime publishing house. He took over as publisher of the company's flagship publication, The Daily Shipping Guide, convertng it from a daily newspaper to an interactive electronic medium serving shipping lines and their customers. When the family-held publishing Company elected to sell the publication to a larger competitor, Kolowich, citing burnout, opted to leave the field to return to his true love - real estate development.
In 1991, he convinced fellow family members to convert a dormant ranch holding near Telluride, Colorado into a recreational horse farm community. Today, the 200-acre Eagle Hill Ranch is regarded as Ouray County's premier equine development. In 1992, Kolowich formed Great West Realty & Investment, which added the RE/MAX affiliation in late 1994. By the end of 1995 the company had grown to the #1 brokerage in the marketplace. In a move to improve its location and space, Kolowich merged his company with Cimarron Group, the oldest company in Ouray County, creating RE/MAX Cimarron Realty, LLC in Sept., 1996. By the end of CY 2000, the company had eight full-time agents, sales approaching $33 million, and net income of $1.34 million
Kolowich lives in a restored 110-year-old farmhouse on 7-acres along the banks of the Uncompahgre River. He enjoys his four children: Kristin (14), Allison (13), Andrew (9) and Ryan (4 yrs.) His pets include an American Quarterhorse (Aly), a llama (Denny), two Sicilian Donkeys (Toby & Spooky) and two Siberian Husky sled dogs (Thor & Panda.)He also has an English Springer Spaniel (Georgia) and her three pups Norman, Chai and Batman.
Brian has been featured on CNN and several nationwide network affiliates for his work in introducing Llamas as "caddies" on area golf Course Fairway Pines. He enjoys jeeping, Colorado mining history, sled dog racing, and floating on Lake Powell.
Kolowich is the organizer of the IRON DOG CLASSIC, an ISDRA-sanctioned sprint sled dog race to be held January 20-21 high above Ouray, Colorado.
