My 2 year battle with Synthetics

Here is how the battle was won...

For the past 2 years here at AR Racing. We have been struggling with this problem about 1993 AR RACING switched from a Naturaly aspirated engine to a Forced Induction beast. The first problem we experianced is taking a 200hp engine block with standard bearings and making it handle 2000hp+. We failed time and time agian we only had between 5-10 passes on a engine then it would spin or highly damage the bearing.

We were using kendall 50w for many years and thought on the N/A engine 60 passes a year was tops on a engine. Now the cold hard facts of reality with close to a 50,000 dollar engine as opposed to 10K the economics of rebuilding were put into perspectives. So the start of 1994 we began to search for a synthetic. We put Synergyn 15w-50 in lasted about 30 passes we said Good, But still yet 1/2 way through the year is no time to lose a engine. So being the self-motivated person i started calling every oil company and every person on the planet. From big to small i called them all. So i was at Saluda South Carolina last year and there was an old boy there with a about a 1980's International bus there had in big letters AMSOIL... I had an interest in finding every possible synthetic on the planet so i asked. I said hey there what's the AM-Soil? He said it's a synthetic. I asked him what he used it in. He said i use it in all my machinery even this bus. I said realy even your puller? Why yes. I then asked about what his change intervals and rebuilds were on his 2000hp 4 Turbo Super Smoker.. He said change the oil? Why i ain't in i quess 3-4 years. I about fell over. Not only had he not changed the oil but was still using the same engine. Then i asked about his cars etc.. He said ah every about 35K. I thought he was crazy and dismissed this person as eather crazy or a liar.

My search continued.. I used mobil 1, Cen-pe-co, Torco, Caterpillar 15w-40, Cat Synthetic 50w. Valvoline synthetic 70w 20w-60. None worked... So i said why not for less than 100$ Lets just give it a shot.. I am And yes it does do what it says..

I have currently had excellant results from the following..

1988 Cavalier Amsoil oil and air cleaners with 0w-30 3MPG increase 28-31 1984 VW Amsoil oil and Air cleaners with 15w-40 51mpg-52mpg From 3000 miles per quart oil consumption now down to 1qt/7000.

Now my 1997 F-350 Powerstroke it gets interesting... since i bought it i put the following.. Rotella T 15w-40 Delvac 1300 15w-40 Delvac 1 5w-40 Delo 400 15w-40

The conventional oils left small traces of varnish and sludge. The synthetic 5w-40 i was so scared of it i drained it at 2000 miles.

Now i'm going to get the dual bypass and full flow from amsoil with eather the 5w-30 or 15w-40 and will be able to go close to 100K miles with routine filter changes.. Now that's what i call a oil..

Just FYI synthetics were used in WWII and were proven by the germans to be highly effective from -40 degrees to 150 degree of Russia's winter to Africas heat.

And just touching on the 3000 mile interval question. Now lets look at Rigs and how big bussiness works diffrent but the same agianst and for us as consumers.

1) 15,000 drain intervals use to be standard. When rigs would be bought the Companys look for #1 the cost of ownership. With mack using 40K drain intervals and say all the rest 15K with oil being the #1 consumable ownership debt. Mack would. The same will occur in Family cars except Ford has ford engines, Chevy has Chevy etc.. but Peterbuilt could have cummins, cat,Mack whatever.. So they will use extended drains etc.. Why would ford, chevy and Dodge jeopardize there warrantys and possibly $$$ from dealers changing oil?

2) Other countrys... Europe in many countrys have no drain plug.. Why ? So you as consumers won't pour oil down the drain. They already imploment 9,000 mile intervals as standard. Corvette and Caddy has considered 15K intervals with only 1qt increase in Sump capacity USING Mobil 1 synthetic. but quess what Mobil 1 recommends 3000 miles why? 4 times the cost + same intervals = 400% profit.

3) would you believe a liar? Probaly not.. that's why GM and ford are 2 faced.. they have 9-10-11K mile drain intervals in europe but preach 3000 to use. But they push the envelope now to 7500 and by 2000-2001 they will push 15K as std.

4) Mercades Benz has been at the forfront of oil, engine and other systems they now have a system that lets you go up to 20K miles by measuring Oxidation in the oil. So see 3000 is ok for yestardays technology but for me i'll rely on what a premium synthetic can give me 21st century drain intervals with the so called protection of 3000 mile intervals..

thanks agian..
