About the Authors

    Dean E. Ewing, DVM is a highly skilled 
veterinarian with a varied and remarkable 
career. He earned a BS and a DVM degree from 
Michigan State University and an MS from the 
University of Rochester Medical School. Dr. 
Ewing spent 22 years in the US Air Force with 
assignments in the space and Civil Defense 
programs, to Southeast Asia, and as the 
senior veterinarian for the U.S. Navy marine 
mammals.

He has served as a board member for the San Diego County Veterinary Medical Association and the Association of Avian Veterinarians and as a delegate to the California Veterinary Medical Association. He also was elected as a Fellow of the Explorers Club. Dr. Ewing has authored numerous papers and is a renowned lecturer in the fields of avian, exotic and aquatic animal medicine. He is an inventor with two medical patents, developer of Bird Life, pelleted avian diets, and founder of The Bird Center and Animal Hosipital in San Diego.

Because of his achievements, he is included in Men and Women of Science; 2000 Notable American Men; and is listed in several biographical volumes including Who's Who in Veterinary Science and Medicine; and Who's Who in North America.He was awarded the US Air Force commendation and meritorious service medals.

He currently resides in Colorado and is a member of the Colorado Springs Area Veterinary Society and the American Veterinary Medical Association. With his more than 40 years of professional experience, Dr. Ewing continues to consult and, in this book, to share some of his experiences and advice with pet owners.

Shirley Herd graduated from the University of Kansas with a BS degree and has excelled as a versatile writer. She is a National Federation of Press Women award winning columnist, has more than 500 magazine and news articles published and been a fiction and non-fiction book reviewer. She worked as a communication specialist, an advertising copywriter and a writer for TV and radio public service announcements. Because of her expertise, she is a frequent guest speaker and workshop director for private and professional organizations.

Herd is the author of four other books: "The Cruising Cook"; "Easy Spanish"; "Blimey Limey! Wha'd He Say?"; and "Seawoman's Handbook". She is listed in Who's Who in the West; Writers, Editors and Poets; International Who's Who of Professional and Business Women; and International Writers and Authors.

She lives in Colorado where she continues her writing career and, because of her love of animals, is a docent at the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo in Colorado Springs.
