Glass blocks were among the earliest types of insulators used for telegraph lines.

One of the three competing lines constructed from Washington, D.C. to New Orleans, LA built during 1848-1851 followed the Natchez Trace through Mississippi. This example was dug from a privy at a pre-Civil War house site in Natchez, and was likely used on that line.
