WINKLEBURY SKATER HOCKEY CLUB INCORPORATING THE WINKLEBURY WOLVES

From playing roller hockey in a local supermarket car park the Winklebury Skater Hockey Club has grown into a structured and disciplined team playing there own version of roller hockey in a Basingstoke league. BDSHL.htm.

The club is run by two parents Graham Goodall and Robert Aldridge, who like the kids, just started the club for a bit of fun. Neither had skated seriously before and now are hooked on the sport.

In 1997 WSHC club received a grant under the Basingstoke and Deane Borough councils Youth 2000 scheme to set up a formal club and offer coaching sessions, kit and gameplay. The club relocated from the supermarket car-park to the sports centre and began offering youngsters from the area a chance to play roller hockey.

Graham says - The aim of the club has always been to offer the sport to kids who don’t have the money to buy expensive kit. With the grant we have been able to purchase this kit and offer it to team members. This includes helmets and visors, shin/knee pads, gloves and elbow pads.

Since its beginnings the club has become an organised and well run outfit with regular coaching sessions and matches. The Winklebury Wolves are involved in a local league which includes 3 other teams from the area.

The first game of the 1998/99 season will be on the 31 October at Greenham Common and a post match report will be posted to this site.
