It All Started With A Sailor Named V ...

Naoko Takeuchi is the creator of Bishojo Senshi Sailormoon and other award-winning manga titles. In September 1986, she won Kodansha's New Manga Artist award with Love Call, published in Nakayoshi Deluxe. She also won the Kodansha Comic Prize of 17th [girls comic branch], in 1993.

Ms. Takeuchi was born on March 15th, 1967, in Kofu City, Yamanashi prefecture. She graduated from Kyoritsu Chemical University. To many people's surprise, Naoko isn't just an artist, she's also a fully licensed pharmacist!

"Chocolate Christmas", "Prism Time," "Rain Kiss," "Ma-ri-ah," and "The Cherry Project." In 1991, she wrote a story about a female heroine called "Codename: Sailor V." Naoko had always wanted to do a heroine story of love and justice. When she told her editor, he said he'd like a heroine of justice in a sailor suit. Naoko created "Sailor V." This was, of course the predecessor to "Bishojo Senshi Sailormoon." Sailor V was written for the Summer edition of Run-Run, a sister publication for Nakayoshi. In that same year, due to the success of Sailor V, Naoko was approached by Toei Animation, who said they wanted to animate Sailor V. Naoko felt that Codename: Sailor V would need a much more in depth storyline, before it was fit to be animated. It was from this that "Bishojo Senshi Sailormoon" came into existence. BSSM debuted in the February '92 issue of Nakayoshi and was an instant success. (The animated series begun on March 6th. 1992) Coincidentally Naoko ended Bishojo Senshi Sailormoon five years later in February 1997.

Currently, Ms. Takeuchi is working on her new series, "PQ Angels," for the monthly shojo magazine, Nakayoshi. There is no news as to wether or not Naoko intends to return to the Sailormoon story. Naoko does not work on the anime series, but she says she's the shows biggest fan! Naoko comments on creating her most loved character, Usagi:" I drew Usagi with the intention of making her lie a real girl her age; lazy, crybabyish, a cheater, and self-centered." [Are all girls really like that?!] Naoko's stories are known and loved around the world. How does she feel about her work? "Being a manga artist is a very creative and very time-consuming, hard job, but its very fun work. But, it takes determination and energy."
