STOUT'S GUINEA PIG PAGE

In this page I will tell you what you will need to own a guinea pig, some of the different breeds and tell you a bit about my guinea pigs. I have seventeen of the little bundles of joy and is wanting even more!

OTHER PART OF THE SITE:
The Breeding Page

Firstly I will go through some of the things you are going to need. 1, to house your guina pig and 2, what you will need to feed them and make them comfortable.

When looking for a cage, you want something that will keep them warm if necessary and something that is big enough for how many guinea pigs you plan on having. If you only want one or maybe two, I strongly recomend that you get two. Guinea pigs are social animals and enjoy each others company. They are much happier this way and it is not much harder to look after considering their food costs close to nothing and they don't need a hell of a lot of room.

When you have bought the cage, then you can think about what kind of guinea pig you want. There are a lot to choose from. I would say that ther are over twenty different breeds of guinea pig. To start off with, I would recomend one of the short haired genre. Maybe a tortoise shell or a golden agouti. These are both very smart looking guinea pigs. If you go looking for one in your local pet shop, you might find that they only have mongrels. This is fine if you plan on keeping guinea pigs as pets only. If you would like to get into some breeding, I would recomend that you find out if there are any guinea pig clubs in your area. They will provide you with a pure bread guinea pig.

FEEDING YOUR GUINEA PIGS
Once your guinea pigs are home, you might want to get them some food. They can eat just about any vegetable you can think of. Carrots, lettuce, spinach, and many others. They also eat fruit. Apples, oranges etc. All you have to remember is that you can't give them too much lettuce. You don't have to be too careful with this rule but don't feed them on this only. All these foods are dirt cheap so there is not much expense involved. Guinea pigs enjoy these foods very much but there is no substitute for grass. They love grass so if there is any available, give them some. It is also healthy for them if you feed them some pelets. You can get these from your local pet shop.

BREEDS OF GUINEA PIG
There are many different breeds of guinea pig. They fit into three main categories. The short haired, the long haired and the ruffled haired. In these three main categories, there are heaps more. I will go through most of them.

SELF BLACK: The self breeds are all one colour. Thus the meaning of self. The black is a very dark black with black claws, ears and eyes.

SELF CREAM: The self cream is a white colour with a tinge of yellow in it. It has light pink ears, claws and can have red or black eyes.

SELF RED: The self red is a dark orange colour and is very impressive. They are also very hard to breed. They have orange ears and claws and have red eyes.

SELF CHOCOLATE: The self chocolate is a rich brown colour and looks very cute. This is my personal favorite out of the selfs. It has brown ears, eyes and claws.

SELF LILAC: The self lilac is a greyish colour. A very strange name to call a guinea pig with that colour. It has red eyes and has white ears and claws.

AGOUTI: There are three types of agouti. There is the silver, golden and salmon. The silver has white hairs mixed in with black hairs. The golden has brown hairs mixed in with black hairs and the salmon has lime coloured haires mixed with black. Their ears, eyes and claws are all brown.

TORTOISE SHELL: The tortoise shell is two different colours. It is black and brown all over. There is supposed to be an even amount of black and brown patches. A tortoise shell with white is the same but you have to have patches of white as well.

CRESTED: The american crested guinea pig is a smoth haired pig with a rosette on its head. It can be any colour. Most of the time the crest is white. An english crested is a pig with one colour all over and has the crest the same colour.

ABYSINIAN: The abysinian is a guinea pig which can be any colour and has rosettes all over its body. It is quite hard to breed a perfect one with the right amount of rosettes on its body.

PERUVIAN: The peruvian can be any colour. It has very long hair which can grow about 30 centimetres. The hair grows in all directions so it is sometimes hard to tell which end is which.

SHELTIE/SILKY: This guinea pig is the same as the peruvian exept it has hair that grows back from its head. You can actually see this guinea pigs head unlike the peruvian.

TEDDY: The teddy can be any colour. It has hair that is longer than the self's, and shorter than the peruvian. Its hair is not smooth. Like the hair on someones beard, it is ruff. Personally I don't like them much
