Brown Goshawk Accipiter fasciatus Male 42cm Female 50cm
Barred brown hawk with long rounded tail.
Adult: grayish-brown above, finely barred pale rufous below, complete rufous
collar.
Imm stages: 1st year (juv): dark brown above, heavily streaked brown on
breast and broadly barred abdomen; two forms, one dark brown with broader
bars, other more reddish-brown, narrower pale rufous bars on breast and
abdomen, no chestnut no collar. 3rd year:bars finer, rufous collar incomplete.
Secretive, generally more common than suspected. Tropical form (race didimus)
smaller, longer toes, grayer above, more apricot bars below.
Voice: rapid chatter "ki-ki-ki..."; slower "swee-swee...";
slow "swee-it swee-it...".
Nesting: large stick nest in tall tree; 2-4 white eggs sometimes spotted.
Range: common resident or migrant in woodlands, forest and riversides throughout
Australia; southern form overlaps tropical form in north, may have regular
migration.
