DT has built a Foucault Tester in one hour, and tested his 8 inch f5.4, and another 8 inch mirror. His mirror seemed OK. 14:04 First cut of the day, 10 inches below top. One pass, then stopped. DT has done 2.50 hours on finishing Carborundum 120 and 1.00 hour using C80 earlier this week. At present, we are planning to use C80, C120, C240, C300, C500 and C800. 15:40 GR grinding with 120 Carborundum. "3/4 finished on 120" - DT. 16:29 Just finished 5 minutes? of compact VHS recording. 16:30 GR still grinding. Now going to use 12T grinding powder (last before polishing starts ?). 17:43 Water sprayed on mirror. 17:44 Tool placed on mirror."No scratching sounds" in moving tool. Very slow strokes to settle in tool by DT. 17:45 Very short strokes by GR . Tool moving slowly. Rounded edge W strokes, not much overhang. 17:47 "Sticking" (GR). Despite frequent water sprays and T12 sprays by DT. 17:48 "Scritch" heard. 17:49 "Scritch" heard. "Very little weight on tool" (GR). 17:50 DT grinding - "Sticking spots". Dry ? Low/high spots ? Continuous application of T12 and water by GR. 17:53 Out of T12 - tool removed. Tool dried with J Cloth to prevent rust. Mirror washed. 18:06 Several scratches detected near part of rim. 18:30 Decision taken to polish. Metal washer tool too course for fine grinding ?? Also, DT has tested 18.5 inch composite f5.95 uncoated mirror on epsilon lyra, two stars were seen (not 4) with 25 mm on test rig. GR suggested solar projection. One small sunspot seen !!! Ok to aluminise !!?

The pits are as wide as this scratch. 19:14 Separation between pits varies between 1 to 2 and 10 to 20 pit diameters. Pits seem of same size across the mirror. Square hole cut in piece of A4 paper 1.5 x 1.5 mm? Number of pits in this hole in mirror centre is over 300? Halfway to rim, number in hole is only about 60 to 70. Two inches in from rim - "more pits than glass" - 400+? Three times as many pits (1200+?) 0.5 inches in from rim.

Some pits "almost too small to see" - DT. Middle of mirror has about 80 - 100 pits in 1.5 mm square. Similar number counted, two inches in from rim. About 300 - 400 pits 0.5 inch in from rim. Total of 30 minutes polishing this session, 87 minutes so far today. 17:55 No pits noticed in polished annulus. Not many pits left in centre, and one inch in from rim - DT. 18:04 Mirror rinsed. 18:05 Lap rinsed. 18:08 Lap put on mirror. DT/GR polishing. 19:11 Lap taken off mirror. Total of 57 minutes polishing, 144 minutes so far today. Mixture of 70 W and 30 up/down strokes used. 19:25 Part of lap has more closure of channels. Mainly in ring around centre of lap? Census of pits in 1.5 x 1.5 mm box: about 60, two inches in from rim; none, halfway to centre; about 15 to 20, very fine, in centre; about 120 0.5 inch in from rim - other parts of rim are not so bad.
