Questions
Now Playing: Daphne
We will begin lab work next meeting, but before that it is important for us to know that a majority of you understand the background information. Please post your responses to the questions below onto this message board so that maybe you can help clarify somebody else's understanding. If you would like us to review any of the topics, please post that also. If you feel more comfortable, feel free to e-mail us your questions at southwaksman@yahoo.net.

1. Why do we use cDNA?

2. How do we make cDNA?

3. What is a plasmid? what is a vector? What is an insert?

4. How do we cut the plasmid? What do we do to the cDNA before we insert it into the plasmid?

5. How do we seperate the DNA strands?

6. How do we clone DNA?

7. How do we know if a bacteria transformed a plasmid? How do we know if that plasmid has an insert?

Review Questions:
1. What is transcription? What is translation?

2. What is splicing?

3. What is a poly-A tail?

4. What is an amino acid? a protein?

5. What are the four DNA bases? Which bases are complementary?

6. What does anti-parallel mean?

A Look Ahead:
How do we take the insert out of the vector?

Posting to the blog
Topic: Posting Q's
Please post your questions about waksman club to the blog!!!! The research can get really confusing at times , so we hope that this blog will provide you with an opportunity to clarify any misconceptions.

To post to your questions, you need to go to the bottom of an already existing post and click on 'post your comment'. To view any new comments under a particular comment, you need to click on the same link. If you click on the "Post to this Blog" on the sidebar, you will get an error, since you are not administrators. I hope I can make the blog more user-friendly soon.

First Meeting
Now Playing: Daphne
The date of our first meeting will be Teusday, September 20th. This meeting is MANDATORY for all those wishing to participate in the South Waksman program, since we'll begin with an important introductory lesson right away. Waksman club will meet every Tuesday thereafter. With your enthusiastic participation, this year's project will be a BLAST! (no pun intended)

Quick Science Fact: A woman proudly wearing a pearl necklace is actually displaying an entombed parasitic worm, not a coated grain of sand. The free, spherical pearl is produced when the larvae from a parasitic flatworm, which comes from seabirds, burrows inside the oyster.

SOURCE: Pearl Expert Prof. Peter Fankboner, Simon Frasier University Please e-mail us (southwaksman@yahoo.com) any interesting science facts!

Welcome

Topic: Welcome!
Welcome to the NEW WW-P High School South Waksman Club Website! Preethi and I, the co-presidents, have just finished the summer research session and we can't wait to continue the research project with all of you!

This year, we're sequencing and analyzing the DNA of the Sea Monkey (Artemia franciscana). See the Artemia site for more info on these amazing creatures.

Stay tuned for the date of our first meeting. If you wish to be on the Waksman mailing list (we'll send you dates of meetings and introductory material on molecular cloning) then please e-mail us at southwaksman@yahoo.com (see contact page).
