                              Chapter 1: Into the fray

      Kari and Gatomon were late to meet with the other Digidestined and hurried to the computer room. "We're here! Sorry we're late!" Kari greeted the other kids and their digimon. "It wouldn't matter if you got here on time. Look..." Cody said, while pointing to Izzy, who seemed to be trying to fix the computer. "It still won't work. Dammit!" Izzy snapped, obviously very frustrated, as he could always fix any computer-related problem they could imagine. "How are we supposed to go to the Digital World like this?" Izzy asked, not really expecting an answer. "Well..." Kari said, as she and Gatomon started walking towards the computer "We could always try what my brother does to get the TV working.". Izzy was confused for a moment and tried to think of what she meant. He suddenly remembered how Tai tried to fix Izzy's laptop when they first went to the Digital World... by hitting it. Izzy was about to protest, but Kari already slammed her fist down onto the computer, which immediately started to boot up. Izzy just stood their in disbelief that such a primitive method would fix the problem. "Tai's methods may be simple, but sometimes they work." Gatomon stated, as Kari pointed her Digivice at the computer. "Digiport open!" she exclaimed. "Hey! I'm supposed to say that!" Yolei complained. The computer started to shake a bit and flashed with a bright, red light as Kari and Gatomon were sucked in. "What the hell's going on?!" Davis shouted "It's not supposed to do that!".  "I don't know if they're even in the Digital World. They could be anywhere now." Yolei said, shielding her eyes from the blinding red light. "Well, I'm going in after her! Come on, Veemon!" Davis yelled, while he and Veemon started walking towards the light. "Davis, wait! This portal is very different and we have no idea where it goes. We have to be careful." Izzy said, trying to reason with Davis. "I don't care! Someone's gotta save Kari." Davis said, lowering his goggles over his eyes. "And Gatomon, too." Veemon added. Suddenly, the portal started shrinking and the light started to dim. "Shit! We've gotta hurry, Veemon!" Davis yelled as he and Veemon ran towards the shrinking portal...

 

                              Meanwhile...

 

      Kari and Gatomon found themselves in a broken down house that looked like it had been hit by a bomb. "Where are we?", Kari wondered out loud, viewing her surroundings, not quite sure what to make of all this. "Good question." Gatomon answered, in a much deeper voice than normal. "Gatomon?" Kari questioned, noticing the difference in her partner's voice as well. "Huh? What is i...?" Gatomon answered, just noticing the change in her own voice. "This can't be happening..." Gatomon said as she moved one of her paws down to feel that she had a protective pouch, which only male digimon had, in order to protect and conceal their dick. "What the hell happened to me?!" she, or rather he, screamed out. Kari was about to say something when they heard voices and footsteps. Kari and Gatomon didn't have anywhere to hide in the room of the house that they were in and had no choice but to see who, or what, was coming their way.

 

(Note: From this point on, I will refer to Gatomon as a male.)

 

      Gatomon, being a very experienced fighter, was prepared to protect Kari with his life. He started sweating a bit, not quite sure what to expect in this strange, new environment. Suddenly, two soldiers, each with the American flag on their suits, came up the stairs. "Think anyone's still here, Lieutenant Biggs?" one of the soldiers asked. "Don't be stupid, Wedge! This house was hit directly by one of our bombs." Wedge snapped back, while lighting a cigarette. "Wait!" Kari said, while coming out of hiding, "Can you help us?". Gatomon looked out, but kept hidden, still not sure of whether to trust these men. Something didn't seem quite right to him. "Sure little girl. I can help you," Wedge answered, while taking a couple steps closer to her, with a strange smile. "After what your friends did to Pearl Harbour..." he said, while reaching into his pocket for something. Gatomon suddenly had an idea of where they were, or rather WHEN. "I'd be happy to help you on the way to hell!" he yelled, taking out his pistol and pointing it at her head, ready to fire. With lightning fast reflexes, Gatomon leaped out and was, in an instant, on the other side of the soldier. The soldier dropped his gun on the floor. "Wedge, what's wrong?" Biggs asked, seeing his comrade's head start twitching a bit. Suddenly, a spray of blood came from Wedge's neck. He tried to stop the spray with his hands, but was already beginning to lose his strength, his eyes rolling to the back of his head as he fell to the ground, very much dead. "Nobody ever threaten's my partner's life and gets away with it." Gatomon stated, with a badassed tone that he could have never managed when he was still female.

 

      "So the Japs even have weird cats, huh?" Biggs said in a cocky manner as he pulled out two pistols from the holsters on his belt. Gatomon motioned for Kari to stand back and got ready to face the soldier. Biggs made the first move by taking a few shots at Gatomon's head. He simply dodged out of the way and moved closer, as Biggs kept on firing madly, sure that he could kill this strange cat. Gatomon skillfully dodged the bullets until he was hit, right in the stomach. "Gatomon!" Kari screamed as she saw his body fall to the floor. "Couldn't dodge forever, could ya, Kitty?!" Biggs bragged. He dropped one of the guns, which was empty, as he moved closer to Gatomon, prepared to finish him off. Biggs moved pointed his gun down to the back of Gatomon's head and prepared to fire. Biggs didn't have time to see what happened as his gun was grabbed from him by Gatomon in the blink of an eye. Biggs fell backwards out of pure shock and Gatomon sprang up to his feet, with the gun pointed right at Biggs' head. "B-but.. I shot you! You should at least be wounded!" Biggs yelled, trying his best not to show the fear in his voice. Gatomon simply laughed at him and continued to insult the soldier, "Me? Wounded by your pathetic weapons? I don't think so. To me, bullets feel like a weak punch." Gatomon. "But to you..." Gatomon said, pushing the gun to Biggs' head, "A shot from this little thing would mean certain death. I'll give you a chance to live, though. You just have to answer my questions.". Biggs nodded his head in agreement. "Where are we and what is the year?" Gatomon questioned. "Odaiba, Japan. The year is 1944! Please don't kill me!" Biggs answered, while sweating profusely and shaking. Gatomon was right. They were in the middle of World War II, or more accurately, near the end of it. "Fine. I'll let you live." Gatomon said, lowering the gun away from Biggs' face, "Now get out of my sight before I change my mind!". Biggs got to his feet and ran off as fast as he could.

 

      "You alright, Kari?" Gatomon asked as he walked up to her. Kari was very shocked by the difference in Gatomon's behaviour. He still was on her side and was obviously trying to protect her, but she never thought that she would see Gatomon act like this before. "Gatomon.. You saved my life again..." Kari said, while at a loss for words. "Don't mention it." Gatomon answered cooly "It is my duty to protect you, after all.". Kari nodded her head and noticed Wedge's body on the ground, along with the large pool of blood underneath. Kari felt like she was going to be sick and turned her head away from the gruesome sight. Gatomon noticed Kari's obvious discomfort and walked up to her. "Let's find someplace that's safe." Gatomon suggested, while taking ahold of Kari's hand and guiding her out of the house.

 

      "This is Odaiba?" Kari said, shocked and scared by her surroundings. The place was a mess, with downed power lines and wrecked cars cluttering the streets. The ground was covered in rubble, shards of broken glass, and bullet casings. The wind was howling and no signs of life could be seen or heard in this barren area that she once knew as her hometown. "Let's go, Kari." Gatomon said, while holding onto Kari's trembling hand. They started walking down the ravaged streets, trying to find a place where they could get some rest. Kari turned to see a body of a child, holding onto a toy. This proved to be too much for her as she fell to her knees and started crying. Gatomon didn't know what to say and just put his paw on Kari's shoulder, trying to comfort her. 'This is horrible. I can't imagine how she must feel right now.' Gatomon thought to himself, looking up at the darkening sky. Gatomon looked around and found another house, this one mostly intact. Kari finally stopped crying and walked with Gatomon into the house.

 

      Gatomon opened the door to the door, but hesitated before walking in, holding his paw out to stop Kari from going in. "Gatomon, what's wrong?" Kari asked. Gatomon didn't want Kari to see any more bodies like the child on the road, so he wanted to see if there was anything in the rooms that would disturb Kari. Plus, there could be more soldiers waiting for them to make a wrong move. "Stay here, Kari. I'll check it out." Gatomon said, while starting to slowly move into towards the door to the next room. "But, Gatomon..." Kari started, knowing that if Gatomon was searching the house, he wouldn't be able to defend her. Gatomon sensed this and tossed her the pistol he had stolen from Biggs "Here. It should still have a few shots left in it.". Kari was about to protest, obviously never using a gun before, but realized that in order to survive, she may have no choice but to use it. Gatomon walked up to the door and slowly turned the handle. The door creaked open eerily as Gatomon looked into the room. There was nothing in the room but a bookshelf and a bed. 'This was rather easy.' Gatomon thought to himself as he called out to Kari, not too loud, but loud enough so that she would hear him "Kari! It's alright!". Kari was very relieved and started walking towards the bedroom.

 

      Kari walked to the bed and sat down, breathing a sigh of relief, as Gatomon sat down next to her. The two of them just sat there in silence for a few minutes, with Gatomon trying to think of something to say to break the silence. "So... I guess you've probably figured out what happened to me." Gatomon said, hoping that would be enough to take Kari's mind off of the whole ordeal for the time being. "Yeah. You're a guy now." Kari said, smiling a bit. "But I'm not sure how it happened. I guess it's some sort of side-effect to time-travel. But why did it only affect me? It just doesn't make any sense..." Gatomon said, while putting his paw on his chin, trying to comprehend the situation. "Your name seems to suit you a bit better now, anyway(*)." Kari said, laughing at Gatomon. Gatomon laughed too, not caring that he was being slightly mocked, but glad that he had cheered Kari up. Kari thought that it was kind of strange at first, but she was starting to like the way Gatomon's new voice sounded. "So what's it like being a guy, Gatomon?" Kari asked jokingly, although she actually was curious to know. "Well, it's not that different, really. Except for the fact that I'm attracted to you. I want you, Kari!"       Gatomon could go without sleep for a long time if need be, but he couldn't have gotten to sleep even if he had wanted to. "And you shouldn't never turn your back in a fight, Kitty!" a familiar voice came from behind Gatomon as he dodged a gunshot just in time. Gatomon saw Biggs, this time with a shotgun. "How dare you!" Gatomon growled, very furious that he was still after them. Biggs fired again at Gatomon, knowing that a shot from this gun would be able to do a great deal more damage than his pistols. Gatomon was forced to jump back, as the closer he was to Biggs, the more dangerous the shotgun blast would be. Suddenly, a bullet struck Biggs in the foot, causing him to grab his foot and scream in pain. This gave Gatomon enough time to knock Biggs out with a kick to the face.

 

      Gatomon looked and saw that Kari had fired the gun and struck Biggs in the leg. "How was that?" Kari asked, glad to know that she was of some help to Gatomon. "Thanks, Kari. You really are helping me with a lot of things today." Gatomon smiled as Kari put the gun back in her pocket. "Once again, not watching your back!" Biggs yelled out. Gatomon turned around, prepared to finish Biggs off once and for all. "You won't take me alive, cat!" Biggs yelled as he pulled a grenade out from his pocket, ready to pull the pin. There was no way that Gatomon could get away in time and still save Kari. What could he do now. BANG!!! A gunshot could be heard from outside of the bedroom. Biggs fell down to the ground. A bullet wound, starting to bleed heavily, was in the back of his head. But who could have done this? Who saved them? "Who is it?!" Kari asked, not sure whether it was a friend or foe. Out of the dark, he walked in to the bedroom, smoking pistol in hand. "Why, your knight in shining armor of course!" Davis said, with Veemon at his side.
