The students here at the University of Washington have put together a file sharing network for those living on campus. This networked is accessed via DC++ and allows faster dowloading than can be found over kazaa. Here is a step-by-step guide to setting up dc++.

DawgFarm
  1. Visit www.sourceforge.net or download DC++ here.
  2. Open the zip file you just downloaded, and extract it to "C:\Program Files\DCPlusPlus" (This location is not required, but recomended, as all further locations will assume you used this default folder).
  3. Open Windows Explorer and navigate to "C:\Program Files\DCPlusPlus" Move the shortcut to "Downloads" and the shortcut to "DCPlusPlus.exe" on your desktop.
  4. Copy the shortcut to your startmenu startup folder: click on the "Start" button, "Programs", right click on "Startup" then click "Open", paste the dcplusplus shortcut into the startup folder.
  5. Run the dcplusplus shortcut.
  6. Once in dcplusplus, click on "File"/"Settings".
  7. Select a username and click on "Passive".
    --OR--
If you want to be active and connect to more users, you can enter your IP address in the IP box. (You can find out your IP address by clicking on the "Start"button, "Run...", then typing "cmd" at the prompt type "ipconfig" , your IP Address will be listed.)
  8. Click on the "Downloads" tab.
  9. Under "Default download directory" enter "C:\Program Files\DCPlusPlus\Downloads\" - make sure you have the '\' at the end.
  10. Under "Default download directory" enter "C:\Program Files\DCPlusPlus\Downloads\Unfinished\" - make sure you have the '\' at the end.
  11. Click on the "Sharing" tab.
  12. Click the "Add folder" button, and add whatever folders you want to share (please share at least your media, like music, movies, tv shows, music videos).
  13. Click the "OK" button
  14. Click on "File"/"Favorite Hubs"
  15. Click on "New..."
  16. In the new pop-up box: Under "Name" enter "UW Fileshare"
  17. Under "Address" enter "dawgfarm.wack.us"
  18. Click the "OK" button
  19. Now, under "Favorite Hubs" click the box next to your newly added favorite, "UW Fileshare" until a check appears.
  20. Select the newly added hub, and click the "Connect" button.
  21. A new window will open. It consists of three panes, a main chat window on the left, a list of connected users on the right, and an entry line on the bottom.
  22. You're Done!
  23. To search for media, click on the magnifying glass on the toolbar or select "File"/"Search", and enter your search parameters.
  24. And remember, it doesn't hurt to leave dc++ open all the time, in fact, the rest of us would appreciate it! (And it doesn't take up any memory.)
