Surgical Procedure:
The
surgery is done in the physician's office, an outpatient
surgical facility or hospital. Chin implants typically
take thirty minutes. An incision is made inside the lower
lip or externally under the chin to allow implant
insertion. Cheek surgery (malar implants) usually takes
about an hour. If done in conjunction with a face or brow
lift, the implant can be inserted through external
incisions. if done alone, an implant is normally inserted
through an incision made inside the upper lip.
It
may be performed under local anesthesia with intravenous
sedatives as required to ensure the patient's comfort, or
under general anesthesia. An anesthesiologist will be
present to administer the sedatives (or general
anesthetic) and assist in monitoring all patients to
ensure their safety. Occasionally, the patient and surgeon
may decide that in order to attain the desired optimal
result, additional ancillary procedures such as laser skin
resurfacing, liposuction, eyelid surgery, or a brow lift
may be required.

Possibilities!
Although complications and bad results are uncommon
from this type of operation, they do sometimes occur. Some of
the possible complications from this operation include:
infection, bleeding, unequal discoloration and swelling of the
face, abnormal contour of the face, nerve damage causing
temporary or permanent loss of feeling in the face or weakness
of facial muscles. Other complication includes untoward
reactions to anesthetic administration and allergic or bad
reactions to one or more of the medications used during or
after the operation.
On some occasions the body may have an adverse
reaction to the implant and they may have to be removed.
Implants can shift or move position and have to be readjusted
in an additional procedure.
Without question complications are seen much more
frequently in smokers, and you are urged not to smoke three
weeks prior to surgery and for three weeks after the operation
to minimize the likelihood of any complications.
The purpose of this information is not to frighten
you, but to ensure that your decision to have this operation
is not made out of ignorance of the potential risks of facial
cosmetic operations.
