RETRO CLASSIC MOTORCYCLES

Robbie Phillis is the star rider in Motorcycling Australia Period 5. Riders in the Forgotten Era International Challenge are importing Suzuki XR69 replicas in an attempt to combat his expertise. These machines use similar Suzuki GSX1100 engines to that of Robbie's Katana.

For newbies, probably an easy way into the Motorcycling Australia Historic Period 5 class - Forgotten Era International Challenge, is to purchase a late 1980s standard production Kawasaki ELR1000 - (Eddie Lawson Replica) motorcycle. Although this machine is eligible for MA Historic Period 6. It is identical to a 70s Z1000 Kawasaki, however it is built the way they should have been back then, and is arguably eligible for Period 5, especially when the compliance plate has been removed.

Currently the most effective all round Forgotten Era International Challenge machine, is a retro motorcycle made by Ken Horner. It is the Irving Vincent, and it has been completely remanufactured.

Retro Norton Manx, and Matchless G50 racers have been manufactured in the UK by Andy Molnar and Fred Warmsley, and in New Zealand by Ken McIntosh. These machines are amongst the most desirable classic racers, and are eligible to race in MA Historic Period 3 class. They are expensive, and a Jawa speedway engined machine is probably a better option for a newbie.
