Chapter 23

Todd had been denied bail…his reputation and record working against him. Hank Gannon had been masterful in presenting a strong case…Todd’s blood under Blair’s fingernails had a powerful impact on the judge’s ruling.

Tea walked slowly toward the corridor that lead to Blair’s hospital room, dragging her depressed feet along, counting the floor tiles as she passed over each one, engaging her mind with the trivial to keep from obsessing. Her failure to get Todd released was weighing heavily on her spirit, remembering the dejection in his hazel eyes at the judge’s ruling, a look that cut deep into her soul, leaving a fresh, bloody wound on her heart. She was not used to losing in court and when it had counted the most…she had let him down.

As she approached Blair’s room she saw Sam sitting by her bed through the glass door, holding her hand and comforting her…a lovely scene out of “Camille.” Tea stopped as Blair’s image came into focus, horrified by what she saw. Blair’s face was swollen beyond recognition, a mask of dark, purple bruises.

She felt light-headed, leaning against the wall for support as a sickening churning swirled around in the pit of her stomach and she closed her eyes. She had been convinced that Blair had orchestrated this…but, in seeing her, it was difficult to believe that she had not been violently assaulted.

As she gathered her composure, Sam came out of the room.

“Sam.”

Sam turned quickly at the sound of his name.

“Tea? What in God’s name are you doing here? Please…please, in the name of God, don’t go in there! You’ll only upset her…and, she’s in no shape for a confrontation with you, not after what Todd did to her.”

“You believe her, then. You believe that Todd raped her?”

Sam took her arm and pulled her down the hall.

“Believe her? Of course I believe her? Did you see her…how broken and beat up she is? What are you saying, Tea…you think she’s faking this?”

“No…I don’t think she’s faking those bruises…but, I don’t believe Todd raped her.”

Sam shook his head slowly.

“You’ve always given Todd your trust, Tea and most times it was completely misplaced…you were wrong. And you’re wrong again this time.”

“Have you forgotten that Blair set Todd up before…for Ben’s murder? That’s why Blair went to prison, Sam! You think you know Blair…but you don’t. I think she’s capable of anything when it comes to Todd.”

Sam looked away.

“Blair was reeling from the break-up of her marriage, Tea…and your husband, Aaron Blackmoor, took advantage of her vulnerability. I wouldn’t have defended her if I thought she was capable of such a thing on her own.”

“Poor Sam. I’ve always admired you…as a lawyer…but, when it comes to Blair, you’re blinded by your feelings for her. She’s using you, Sam, manipulating you. The only man she wants is Todd and if she can’t have him…she’ll destroy him. She’s Medea, obsessed with revenge…not love…revenge. That’s who Blair is, Sam.”

“No…she’s not like that. She’s a good person, a wonderful mother…I think it is you who don’t know her, Tea.”

“A wonderful mother? Tell me, Sam…did she tell you how Starr came to be living with her a few weeks ago?”

“She said it was Starr’s decision.”

“Yes, it was Starr’s decision…after Blair let Starr know that her father was a rapist and that it was dangerous for Starr to live with him.”

“What?”

“Yes, that’s why Todd went over the edge. I see Blair neglected to fill you in on the gruesome details.”

Sam looked away and walked toward a nearby window, shaking his head.

“I…can’t believe Blair would do such a thing. She wouldn’t hurt Starr that way.”

“Well…than Starr must be lying…because she’s the one that told me.”

Sam turned around.

“Even if that’s true, Tea…it doesn’t mean Todd didn’t assault her. We both know he’s more than capable of it if he got angry enough.”

“Yes…maybe some years ago that would have been true, but not now. He’s not that man anymore. Todd is happy with me and with our family, he wouldn’t risk all of that just to hurt Blair.”

Sam walked over to Tea and lifted her face with his hand.

“Can you really be sure? I mean 100% sure, Tea?”

Tea looked up at him, her dark eyes misting.

“Yes,” she said emphatically.

“Well…I’m not blinded with love for him like you are. I can’t believe Blair would lie about this, not in her condition.”

“Sam…I’ll prove she’s lying.”

Sam stepped away from her.

“How Tea? All the proof is on Blair’s side.”

Tea fingered the condom wrapper in her pocket.

“I ‘m not sure right now…but, I know she’s lying.”

“Well…I guess the courts will have to decide that, Tea. Look, I’ve got to get to work but promise me you won’t go in there…you’ll just upset her.”

“No, I won’t. I just came by for a copy of her medical records…and…to see how she’s doing.”

Sam nodded, then walked away, disappearing into the elevator.

Tea resisted the urge to go into Blair’s room, to shake the truth out of her. As she started walking away, she noticed a young woman near Blair’s door, a young woman with pink-colored, spiky hair, fishnet stockings and steel-tipped boots. There was something vaguely familiar about her, something in her wild blue eyes echoing in her memory, fuzzy and vague, like a negative of a photograph.

The young woman looked around suspiciously before entering.

Tea inched her way toward Blair’s door and slipped behind a square column, allowing her to see into the room. At first, Blair looked angry at her visitor but then she seemed to soften to her presence, even managing a smile. The young woman took Blair’s hand and to Tea’s surprise kissed it passionately…almost reverently, then kneeled beside her bed in what seemed like a gesture of worship.
