REACHING OUT
chapter 67:
[Hours later...
Tea awakens in a panic. She quickly realizes where she is and with whom, but her panic refuses to abate. Her anxiety only increases as she realizes that she's trapped. She can't move her legs to make the quick exit from the bed that she feels she needs, but her wheelchair also isn't available to her since Todd never brought it into the house, despite her numerous requests for him to do so.
Tea tries to remove Todd's arm from her stomach but he quickly returns it, pulling her closer to him, afraid, even in his sleep, of losing her if he lets go of her.
Tea hates to wake him, but the bedroom has become dark while they slept and the eerie shadows of an unfamiliar room are worsening her anxiety.]
Tea: Todd? Todd? Wake up. Todd? I need you to wake up.
[Todd suddenly startles awake.]
Todd: Delgado?
Tea: I'm sorry I had to wake you.
Todd: Where the hell are we?
Tea: You bought a house for us, remember?
Todd: Right. Do you need me to help you in the john?
Tea: I need you to get my wheelchair.
Todd: I'll carry you.
Tea: Please, get my wheelchair.
Todd: I thought you were okay letting me help you with that now.
Tea: I will never be okay with losing the most basic level of my personal privacy.
Todd: I just woke up, talk English.
Tea: It's humiliating.
Todd: It's better than some stranger having to live with us, isn't it?
Tea: No.
Todd: I'll hire you a stranger, if that's what you want.
Tea: Right now, the only thing I want is for you to get my wheelchair.
Todd: What's wrong? Your voice sounds weird.
Tea: I'm fine. I just need my wheelchair.
Todd: Are you hungry? I'll bring you something to eat.
Tea: Bring me my wheelchair.
[Todd tries to pull her closer to him, certain that something is wrong.]
Todd: What's going on, Tea?
[Tea pushes him away and moves her body further away from him on the bed.]
Tea: If you won't get my wheelchair, I'll get it myself.
Todd: Delgado...
Tea: I'm not your prisoner.
Todd: I never said you were.
Tea: I hate feeling like I'm trapped. That's how you make me feel.
Todd: I thought you liked it when I carried you around.
Tea: I like my freedom. Agreeing to live with you again was a mistake.
Todd: Don't say that.
Tea: I mean it. I should move back to the clinic, at least until I find my own place.
Todd: Everything was okay when you fell asleep. Now, you want to kick me out of your life and go back to living with a bunch of strangers. Did you have a nightmare, or something?
[Todd is horrified as he hears a loud thud on the floor at the other side of the bed.]
Todd: Delgado? Answer me! Delgado?
Tea: I'm okay.
Todd: I'll turn the lights on and get you back in bed.
[Todd rushes across the room and feels against the wall until he finds the light switch. As the overhead light illuminates the room, he quickly returns to the other side of the room and joins Tea on the floor.]
Todd: Are you okay? Did you hurt yourself? What the hell were you trying to do?
Tea: I was trying to get to my wheelchair.
Todd: Should I take you to a doctor?
Tea: The only thing damaged is my ego.
Todd: I'm taking you to a hospital.
Tea: I'm fine.
Todd: What if you hurt yourself and you don't know it?
Tea: I fall down, Todd. That's what I do now. I'm not going to the doctor every time I take a little fall.
Todd: That wasn't little. Did you hear how loud it was? You might have broken a leg, or a hip, or whatever girls have that can break when they fall off the bed because they're being stubborn and not doing what their husbands tell them to do.
Tea: Are we still married?
Todd: I'll get your chair. Then, I'll take you to the hospital.
Tea: If I allow you to examine me, will you drop the idea of taking me to the hospital?
Todd: I'm not in the mood right now, Tea, I'm really worried about you.
Tea: I wasn't suggesting anything intimate. That's the last thing I want right now.
Todd: Especially with me.
[Todd picks Tea up in his arms and returns her to the bed. Before she can respond to his last statement, he leaves the room.]
