Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl

Scene 1: “8 Years Ago”

[Out of the fog, the Dauntless appears, with a twelve year old Elizabeth Swann at the bow]

Young Elizabeth [singing] : We pillage, we plunder, we rifle and loot. Drink up me 'earties, yo ho! We kidnap and ravage and don't give a hoot. Drink up me 'earties, yo ho! Yo ho, yo ho, a pirate's life for me. We extort, we pilfer, we filch and sack. Drink up –

[A hand grabs her shoulder, cutting off her song. She turns, startled, to see Mr. Gibbs]

Gibbs: Quiet, missy! Cursed pirates sail these waters. You don’t want to bring them down on us now, do ya?

[Lieutenant Norrington and Governor Swann appear]

Norrington [sharply] : Mr. Gibbs, that will do!

Gibbs [to Norrington]: She was singing about pirates! Bad luck to be singing about pirates with us mired in this unnatural fog. Mark my words.

Norrington [uninterested] : Consider them marked. On your way.

Gibbs [walking off] : Aye, Lieutenant. [to himself] It’s bad luck to have a woman on board, too, even a miniature one.

Young Elizabeth [to Norrington and the Governor] : I think it’d be rather exciting to meet a pirate.

Norrington: Think again, Miss Swann . [walks up next to Elizabeth at the bow] Vile and dissolute creatures, the lot of them. [looks out over the water] I intend to see to it that any man who sails under a pirate flag or wears a pirate brand gets what he deserves – a short drop and a sudden stop. [smiles smugly at Elizabeth]

[Elizabeth glances at Gibbs who mimes a hanging]

Governor Swann [coming up behind Norrington and Elizabeth] : Lieutenant Norrington, I appreciate your fervor. But I’m…I’m concerned about the effect this subject will have upon my daughter.

Norrington [sincerely] : My apologies, Governor Swann.

Young Elizabeth: Actually, I find it all quite fascinating.

Governor Swann: Yes, that’s what concerns me.

[Governor Swann and Norrington walk off, and Elizabeth returns to looking at the water]

[Elizabeth notices a parasol floating in the water]

[She leans out to get a better look, and sees a young boy floating on a piece of wood]

Young Elizabeth [shouting back to her father and Norrington] : Look, a boy! There’s a boy in the water!

Norrington [reacts quickly, shouts to his men] : Man overboard! Haul him aboard!

[The men quickly pull the boy aboard and lay him down on the deck. Norrington examines him, checks his breathing]

Norrington: He’s still breathing.

Gibbs [leaning out, spots a burning ship] : Mary Mother of God!

[Several of the crew, including Norrington and Governor Swann, rush to the side to see]

Governor Swann [shocked] : What happened here?

Norrington: It’s most likely the powder magazine. Merchant vessels run heavily armed.

Gibbs: A lot of good it did them. Everyone’s thinking it; I’m just saying it – pirates!

Governor Swann: There’s no proof of that. It was probably an .

Norrington [walking off, calling orders] : Rouse the Captain immediately! Heave to and take in sail, lower the boats.

Governor Swann [holding Elizabeth by the shoulders] : Elizabeth, I want you to accompany the boy. He’ll be in your charge. Take care of him.

[Elizabeth walks over to where the boy now lays.]

[She brushes the hair from his face, and the boy suddenly jolts, gasps, and grabs her wrist. Elizabeth gasps, then breathes]

Young Elizabeth: It’s ok. My name’s Elizabeth Swann.

The Boy [stutters]: W-W-Will Turner.

Young Elizabeth: I’m watching over you, Will.

[Will falls back into unconsciousness, and Elizabeth notices a gold medallion about his neck. She removes it and examines it.]

Young Elizabeth [shocked] : You’re a p-pirate.

[Norrington appears]

Norrington: Has he said anything?

[Elizabeth wheels to face him, and hides the medallion behind her back]

Young Elizabeth: His name is William Turner. That’s all I found out.

Norrington [to his crew]: Take him below.

[Elizabeth returns to examining the medallion.]

[When she looks up, she sees a ghostly black ship, flying a frightening flag]

[Elizabeth gasps, then we see her in her bed, awaking from the dream, twenty years old]
