kirstie alley, rebecca howe

1 9 8 5 - 1 9 8 8

During these years Kirstie had quite a lot of film roles, however, it was during this time that she secured the role that made her a household name as Rebecca in Cheers. As on the previous page, a lot of the films can be hard to find. I only have one of them myself. But you never know when BBC2 is going to decide to show some random Alley film in it's matinee slot, i've managed to see three of Kirstie's films in this slot in the last couple of months.

A Bunny's Tale

Written by Gloria Steinem about her personal experience working undercover as a playboy bunny girl, Kirstie plays the lead role. This was a TV film, so therefore i haven't found anywhere it's available to be bought. I would love to see this film as i've read only good reviews and it sounds kind of fun. I guess i'll just have to keep my eye on the tv guides.

North and South (Books I & II)

The story of this televised mini-seris centres around the friendship of two young men on opposite sides during the American civil war. Kirstie stars as the 'corrupted sister(!)' of one of the men. The 'books' were aired in 6 part series in the US and are available from amazon.co.uk in VHS format. The first two books were big-budget and well received. Book 3 was less sucessful, and compared to the previous series' received poor reviews. The series also starred Patrick Swayze! I found this webpage which offers an episode guide and other info.

Stark II: Mirror Image

This is a sequel to a tv film about a detective, 'Stark' from Kansas City. In Mirror Image, he tracks down the killer of his best friend and collegue. The search leads him to Las Vegas where he learns about his friend's double life. I'm not clear on Kirstie's role as info on this film is scarce, and i've unfortunately never seen it for sale anywhere.

Prince of Bel Air

Mark Harmon stars as a womanizing, wealthy californian who starts a mis-matched relationship with Jamie (Kirstie Alley). This was made for TV, although it was released on video in the US. The best i can do i'm afraid is the trailer. The movie looks kind of fun, although i reckon any movie filmed in the sunshine is usually easy watching .

Cheers

cheers

Well i could write forever about this show, but this supposed to be a Kirstie Alley website, not a Cheers one, so i'll stick to the point. Kirstie joined Cheers from season 6 (1987) until it finished 6 years later. She replaced Shelley Long (as Diane) as the lead female role of Rebecca Howe, a neurotic business-woman. Some people said that the show 'Jumped the Shark' after Diane left, and i have to admit that the chemistry between Diane and Sam was fantastic, but i think Kirstie was better. Of course .

When Rebecca replaced Diane, Kirstie shot to fame and the media were all over it. I found this site which has several articles from Australian magazines from this time. Cheers was a hugely popular show, one of the all time greats, great characters and fantastic writing. It won loads of awards and i reckon few people don't recognise this theme. For more info on Cheers i would recommend the epguide episode guide and Tom's Quote Page. But i'm sure there are loads more out there. The Cheers boxsets are available pretty much everywhere, so no real searching needed. Go buy. Go watch.

Infidelity

A TV movie about a man who seeks comfort after his wife's miscarriage, and ends up finding it with his wife's best friend. Kirstie plays 'Ellie Denato' in the film, but i've been unable to clarify her exact role other than that her character shares a surname with the cheating husband, go figure. The film also stars Courtney Thorne-Smith of Ally Mcbeal fame. I don't think this film was released on video.

Summer School

'I have to say, i loved this movie' (Dave). Yes, it's true. I spent several months tracking it down, and being over 15 years old, the picture quality isn't great, but hey, it's a fantastic film. As i've said before, any film shot in the Californian sunshine is usually easy watching; this film is no exception. Mark Harmon plays Freddy Shoop, a laid-back gym teacher that gets blackmailed into teaching remedial english at summer school. Roll on the usual bunch of cliched mis-fits. But saying that, they have their moments. By bribing them with such things as driving lessons and parties, Shoop finally gets them to pay attention in class, and with the help of Robin Bishop (Kirstie), another teacher, Shoop learns how to be a proper teacher. Cue the love story; Shoop spends the whole of summer trying to convince Robin to go on a date with him, after a bad start involving one of my favourite Kirstie moments ('Perhaps you people copuld concentrate on some obscene gestures instead?'), will he get the girl? Now there's a hard question(!). Despite the fact Kirstie isn't the lead role, the film is still great veiwing due to the range of unique characters and amusing storylines. This one was definitely worth the effort finding it. I'd recommend ebay as the only likely place to find it. Good luck, and to keep you occupied, here's the trailer. It's interesting to note that Kirstie has starred alongside both Mark Harmon and another of the film's stars, Courtney Thorne-Smith in previous projects.

Shoot to Kill

Also known as 'Deadly Pursuit' in the UK, Kirstie sort of semi-stars in this film. The main 'stars' are Sidney Poiter and Tom Berenger. Kirstie plays a mountain guide, Sarah, who is kidknapped and forced to lead a man wanted for murder across the border - meanwhile her boyfriend (a reclusive mountain ranger) and chief cop guy (who has no idea about the mountains) are hot on their heels, slowly forming a cliched, but amusing to watch, friendship. The film is an 'action thriller', but it has a touch of humour, and there's enough of Kirstie in it for me to add to my list. I (as usual) found this on ebay, but who knows, maybe you'll find it lurking in the oldies section of your local video store :)

She's Having A Baby

This Ben Miller film is about a couple, and how pregnancy tests their relationship. Kirstie doesn't have a credited role in the film, but as far as i can tell, she appears alongside other stars such as Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta during the credits of the film, suggesting baby names. This film can be bought on amazon.
