We ran down the halls and found one with a guard moving towards someone or something in front of him. We came up behind him and Marc-Andre used his gun as a bat to knock the guard out. We all looked to what he was moving towards and we saw the twins.
"Mary-Kate!" I yelled.
"Brett!" She yelled and she ran into my arms.
Ashley hugged Marc-Andre, but we were quickly brought back to attention when the guards were now moving in on all of us. We made our way into a corner and put up a few metallic tables on the side as a sort of bunker. We were pinned down and weren't getting anywhere.
"This is nuts!" Kathryn said, "We're pinned down IN AN ENEMY PRISON BASE!"
"Thanks for the news flash." Ashley said sarcastically.
"Hey! Back off!" Kathryn shot back.
"Don't talk to my sister like that!" Mary-Kate said defensivly.
"Ladies," I said, "the enemy is that way," I pointed down the hall, "how about we finish fighting them before you fight eachother."
"Sorry." They all said.
"I'm running out of ammo." Marc-Andre said, "and it doesn't look like they are running out of guys."
"My radio's shot." I said.
"I thought you just charged the battery this morning." Kathryn said.
"No, I mean it's SHOT." I pointed to my radio, which had a bullet in it.
"Oh yea," Marc-Andre slapped his forehead. "I forgot we had these."
He proceeded to radio Captain Gibson and the others for them to come and assist. They arrived and turned the tides of the fight, but we didn't know how long it would last. We quickly escaped from the prison and headed for our little camp, just as the storm arrived.
"They're chasing us!" Ashley yelled as we ran. Dust was being kicked up around us as bullets missed us and hit the sand.
"Don't worry!" Captain Gibson said, "I called in for support just before we left to help you."
"So that leaves… about 10 minutes until they get here?" I said.
Gibson nodded and we were left to fend for ourselves. We took position in a small ditch and returned fire to those from the prison base.
"There are too many of them!" Paul yelled out.
"Hold position!" Gibson yelled over the gunfire.
"Oh no!" Mary-Kate yelled.
"Hang on Mary-Kate." I yelled.
"Marc-Andre!" Ashley called.
"Get behind me Ashley!" He yelled back to protect her.
Minute after agonizing minute ticked by, and our ammo was getting low. Like two banshees in the night, two helicopters flew by with gatling guns blazing. A transport helicopter set down behind us and we all ran to it.
It lifted off and we were safe for now. I held Mary-Kate in my arms and I never wanted to let her go ever again. It was silent for a while, everyone breathing a sigh of relief.
"We saw our parents." Ashley said to Marc-Andre. "They're alive. We have to go back for them."
"We will." Captain Gibson said, "When we get back to base, we will get a rescue force and get your parents back."
We landed at the base and everyone was cheering and celebrating. We all looked around in confusion and John asked a soldier what was going on.
"The war's over! We won!" He cheered and left to rejoin the celebration.
We all stood there in shock. It was over, it was finally over. Marc-Andre, Mary-Kate, Ashley and I all thought back to everything that had happened since the war's start. We remembered the original attack back in Los Angeles, to meeting Matt in Riverside, going through basic training and Mary-Kate and I constant fighting, Ryan and everything he did.
From the joys of when Mary-Kate and I started dating, to the sadness of losing Matt in the fighting. We have never given up on each other; we have helped one another through good and bad, happy and sad, life and death.
We made friends along the way like Captain Gibson, Paul, John and Kat and they have all had an impact on our lives. Although we greatly miss Matt, we know he is always watching over us and we can feel his presence.
I looked at Mary-Kate and I made my decision. I bent down on one knee and she looked at me, a little confused at first. I reached into my left chest pocket and pulled out the used picture of Mary-Kate and I and a small box.
I took her hand and looked into her eyes. "Mary-Kate, I have loved you for as long as I can remember. I promise to protect you from harm, to love you unconditionally and to stay by your side; Mary-Kate, will you marry me?" and I opened the box, revealing an engagement ring.
She looked at me for a few seconds and smiled as big as I have ever seen her smile. "I will marry you, Brett!" I slid the ring on her finger, kissed her and raised her and twirled her around.
