My Elvis Presley Discography

I enjoyed reviewing my Elvis CD collection, so I decided I should have an archive for my ever-growing DVD collection. The DVD's are in the order that I got them and are a mixture of films, documentaries and live shows. I will post every DVD I get here, just as I have with the discography. Uh-huh.

Aloha From Hawaii 10/10

I got this at a bargain price of £14.99 and what an excellent DVD it is. When you open the shiny cardboard casing and watch the entire concert from the begining, you're left speechless. Fed live around the world in January 1973, Aloha from Hawaii was a groundbreaking performance and shows Elvis at his best. He plays about 20 of his best songs, and watching him perform 'What Now My Love', and 'AnAmerican Trilogy' is an unforgettable experience. The extras just include a few rehersal songs, which are okay, but seeing him get all the words wrong in 'Burning Love' is not something you really want to see. The helicopter landing is also an extra on the DVD, but again not great to watch. You buy this for the flawless live concert, and only that. This is the best Elvis live DVD you can buy. You must have it.

That's The Way It Is 10/10

What a DVD this is. An MGM documentary from 1970, Elvis: That's the Way it Is shows Elvis in some of his best performances in The International Hotel in Las Vegas absoluetly stunning every audience member, with his return to music form Hollywood. That's the Way it Is follows the show's genesis from rehearsal to stage, with the performance footage that provides its inevitable climax shot over six nights. The rehearsal footage, expanded for this special edition, offers further proof that Presley's band was still amazing, and it also shows Elvis enjoying himself and fooling around like he always did. Watching Elvis rehearsing backstage is great, but you bought this DVD for the live performances which are flawless and inspiring. There are about 30 songs altogether offering about an hour of live music, including 'Love Me Tender' which sees Elvis entering the audience area and kissing nearly every woman in the crowd. There are a few medlies and a 'Suspicious Minds' performance which is out of this world. The best part is that you can get this amazing DVD for about £7 so what are you waiting for?

Jailhouse Rock 9/10

Elvis' second movie and argueably his best. The film sees Elvis perform as 'bad-boy' Vince Everet who is jailed for brutally murdering someone, which I might add, we are treated to seeing in the first scene of the movie. Anyway, Vince meets a guy who used to be a country singer. Inspired by this Vince is eventually released and he goes on to be a star after meeting his manager (Judy Tyler) in a bar. Elvis acts very well in this film, making the mood-swinging Vince Everet one of his most believeable and interesting characters, and the 'Jailhouse Rock' scene is one that can be enjoyed again and again. Elvis never watched this film as his co-star Judy Tyler died in a car crash several months after its release, but that's no reason for you not to enjoy this classic film.

King Creole 8/10

Another early Elvis film and another of his best. The storyline follows bad-boy Danny Fisher (Elvis) who depite his fathers wishes, drops mout of school and begins a musical career at the King Creole bar. With rival clubs and gangs entered into the equation, Danny finds himself making problematic decisions in an attempt to help his dad and rescue his girl from a life of misery.
The music selection in this film is excellent with the likes of Hard-Headed Woman, Trouble and obviously King Creole. Certainly one of Elvis's best films and a very enjoyable watch.

'68 Comeback Special 10/10

The NBC show was dubbed the 'Comeback' because many saw this as Elvis's return to doing what he did best, and it was his first show since leaving Hollywood. In case you haven't seen it, the 1968 Comeback Special was a TV broadcast showing Elvis enjoying a stand-up and sit-down performance in teh middle of a small audience on a red square-shaped stage. As well as these there were several seperate recorded performances of 'Troub;e', 'Guitar Man' and 'If I Can Dream' along with a few others.
The DVD is a good one with a lot of unseen footage of Elvis during the takes, including all the takes that didn't make it. As great as these are to watch, you buy this for the main performance which is still very entertaining to see.
Any Elvis fan must own this 3-disc set of Elvis argueably at his best.
