Elvis 30 #1 Hits 10/10
This is definately the definitive Elvis album. As you'd expect, it has 31 of Elvis' most poular Number 1's including the recent 'Little Less Conversation' remix which also reached number one without Elvis even being alive. It has the hugely popular 'Suspicious Minds' and an excellent mix of Elvis originals. In my opinion the best three songs are 'Stuck On You', 'Burning Love' and 'Don't Be Cruel'. This was the first album I got and it started what turned out to be a huge interest in Elvis' music. This album is a must for new Elvis fans as I was, and collectors.
Heartbreak Hotel, Don't Be Cruel, Hound Dog, Love Me Tender, Too Much, All Shook Up, (Let Me Be Your) Teddy Bear, Jailhouse Rock, Don't, 1 Hard Headed Woman, One Night, (Now & Then) There's A Fool Such As I, A Big Hunk O' Love, Stuck On You, It's Now Or Never, Are You Lonesome Tonight?, Wooden Heart, Surrender, (Maries The Name) His Latest Flame, Can't Help Falling In Love, Good Luck Charm, She's Not You, Return To Sender, (You're The) Devil In Disguise, Crying In The Chapel, In The Ghetto, Suspicious Minds, The Wonder Of You, Burning Love, Way Down, A Little Less Conversation (JXL remix)
Elvis 2nd To None 9/10
Inevitably, after loving the first album so much I shortly after bought 2nd To None which I'm happy to say does not surrender any of the excellent form of 30 #1's. At first I prefered this album when I first got it, but I now feel that overall these songs don't have the longevity as the first 30 #1's. It's still undeniably fantastic though. It includes another huge range of Elvis vocals from the classic 'Viva Las Vegas' to the anthemic 'American Trilogy' and If I Can Dream'. From honky-tonk to inspirational, this album is also a 'must' for any new Elvis fan. My three favourite songs on the album are 'Promised Land', 'I Need Your Love Tonight' and 'If I Can Dream'. This album truely is 2nd to none... Except 30 #1 Hits...
That's All Right, I Forgot To Remember To Forget, Blue Suede Shoes, I Want You, I Need You, I Love You, Love Me, Mean Woman Blues, Loving You, Treat Me Nice, Wear My Ring Around Your Neck, King Creole, Trouble, I Got Stung, I Need Your Love Tonight, A Mess Of Blues, I Feel So Bad, Little Sister, Rock-a-Hula Baby, Bossa Nova Baby, Viva Las Vegas, If I Can Dream, Memories, Don't Cry Daddy, Kentucky Rain, You Don't Have To Say You Love Me, An American Trilogy, Always On My Mind, Promised Land, Moody Blue, I'm A Roustabout, Rubberneckin' (Oakenfold Remix)
Love, Elvis 8/10
Not as essential as the other two albums as it contains several tracks from each, along with a lot of other ones. Elvis was well-known for his quality of love songs, and this collection bears no exception. From the slow and peaceful melodies such as 'Are You Lonesome Tonight', to the more up-beat tracks such as the live version of 'I Just Can't Help Belivin'', this album has the very best. Elvis Presley no doubt did the best version of 'Unchained Melody' and it is here along with 23 others in their digitally remastered form. My three favourites are 'Doin' The Best I Can', 'I Just Can't Help Belivein'' and 'Let It Be Me'. It is certainly an excellent quality album and only misses out on a perfect ten because it only has 24 songs, and there's definately room for more.
Are You Lonesome Tonight?, Can't Help Falling In Love, Always On My Mind, It's Now Or Never, Love Me Tender, I Want You, I Need You, I Love You, Don't, (Now And Then There's) A Fool Such As I, Any Way You Want Me, Surrender Hawaiian Wedding Song, Doin' The Best I Can, Fever, It Hurts Me, I Just Can't Help Believin', The Wonder Of You, Let It Be Me, It's Impossible, For The Good Times, There Goes My Everything, And I Love You So, You Don't Have To Say You Love Me, Unchained Melody, If I Can Dream
The Country Side Of Elvis 10/10
Luckily I was already a fan of Country music before buying this album from iTunes, and having downloaded all 51 songs in one go, I knew I had something to look forward to. 'It Wouldn't Be The Same Without You' was recorded when Elvis was 18 so the sound quality is pretty poor, but from there after the songs all sound fantastic. There are so many songs to choose from, before buying this I never knew Elvis released so much country stuff and every track is great to listen to. 'Old Shep' may come across a bit disturbing but it's made up for by beautifully catchy tracks such as 'Faded Love' and 'Guitar Man'. This is probably the best country album ever made because of its range and large number of tracks. Admittedly, some of the tracks are forgettable due to the vast amount but on the most part it is an album you'll listen to again and again. It has been difficult to narrow down my three favourite songs, but I'll have to say it's 'Faded Love', 'Little Cabin On The Hill' and 'Talk About The Good Times'. Don't think about it, if you're an Elvis fan get the album!
It Wouldn't Be the Same without You - Blue Moon of Kentucky - I Love You Because - Just Because - I'm Left, You're Right, She's Gone - I Forgot to Remember to Forget - I'm Countin' on You - How Do You Think I Feel - How's the World Treating You? - Old Shep - Your Cheatin' Heart - A Fool Such as I - There's Always Me - It's a Sin - Guitar Man - Just Call Me Lonesome - You Don't Know Me - After Loving You - Long Black Limousine - I'm Movin' On - I'll Hold You in My Heart (Till I Can Hold You in My Arms) - From a Jack to a King - Kentucky Rain - It Keeps Right on A-hurtin' - If I'm a Fool (For Loving You) - Release Me - Funny How Time Slips Away - Little Cabin on the Hill - There Goes My Everything - I Really Don't Want to Know - Tomorrow Never Comes - Faded Love - Make the World Go Away - Help Me Make It Through the Night - For the Good Times - Always on My Mind - You Gave Me a Mountain - I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry - Welcome to My World - Take Good Care of Her - It's Midnight - You Asked Me To - Loving Arms - Talk about the Good Times - There's a Honky Tonk Angel - Fairytale - Green Green Grass of Home - Susan When She Tried - T-R-O-U-B-L-E - She Thinks I Still Care - He'll Have to Go
Ultimate Gospel 10/10
You into gospel music? Probably not. I certainly have never given it much time but when hearing Elvis sing it, suddenly it becomes highly accessible. Elvis was a very religious man and when he began singing gospel music it was met with a certain amount of controversy as at the time, it was a music style that mainly black people were associated with. Despite this, Elvis has recorded some of the greatest gospel songs in history and the best of those have been collected on this excellent album. His outstanding voice is suited perfectly to every single song. Even if you don't like gospel music, if you're an Elvis fan you'll instantly love this as the anthem's suddenly become some of the most powerful and beautiful songs you have ever heard. Elvis combines, and applies his unique singing style with some classics such as 'You'll Never Walk Alone' and 'Amazing Grace' and produces the best versions of the songs ever. This album is highly recommended, especially if you want to hear everything Elvis had to offer. Once again, my top 3 from this album are 'Milky White Way', 'Swing Down Sweet Chariot' and 'Joshua Fit The Battle'.
How Great Thou Art, So High, Amazing Grace, Crying In The Chapel, You’ll Never Walk Alone, Swing Down Sweet Chariot, Milky White Way, His Hand In Mine, I Believe In The Man In The Sky, Where Could I Go But To The Lord, If The Lord Wasn’t Walking By My Side, Run On, He Touched Me, Bosom Of Abraham, Lead Me, Guide Me, Joshua Fit The Battle, If We Never Meet Again, I, John, Reach Out To Jesus, Who Am I?, Help Me, Miracle Of The Rosary, Take My Hand, Precious Lord, (There’ll Be) Peace In The Valley (For Me)
Double Feature: Love In Las Vegas/Roustabout 7/10
There is a good reason why this album only recived 7/10 when the others have been 9's and 10's and it's because this album is a soundtrack to the Elvis films 'Love In Las Vegas' and 'Roustabout'. Although the majority of these songs are very good as usual, the songs carry with them little meaning if you haven't seen the films. It's difficlut to gain appreciation for songs like 'It's Carnival Time' when you're not sure why he's singing it and you've no idea who the other people singing in it are. Also, due to the fact that they are performed during the story many of the songs are short and many are under 2mins long. Regardless, the standard of the songs is good and I'm sure that when I see the flims the score wil raise. It's a very good soundtrack and 'Viva Las Vegas' is as good as ever, but film viewing comes recommended. Anyway, the best three songs are 'Yellow Rose Of Texas', 'Poison Ivy league' and 'There's A Brand New Day On The Horizon'. If you're looking for a new Elvis album to buy, there are better alternatives out there, but this stands it's ground as a decent album nonetheless.
Viva Las Vegas , If You Think I Don't Need You , If You Need Somebody To Lean On, You're The Boss, What I'd Say, Do The Vega, C'mon Everybody, Lady Loves Me, Night Life, Today Tomorrow And Forever, Yellow Rose Of Texas/The Eyes Of Texas, Santa Lucia, Roustabout, Little Egypt, Poison Ivy League, Hard Knock, It's A Wonderful World, Big Love Big Heartache, One Track Heart, It's Carnival Time, Carny Town, There's A Brand New Day On The Horizon, Wheels On My Heels
Aloha From Hawaii (via satellite) 10/10
After buying the 'Aloha From Hawaii' DVD and being blown away by it, it came as a pleasant suprise to find a remastered soundtrack at a very reasonable price of £6.97. It's nothing short of fantastic because if there's one thing better than listening to Elvis, it's listening to Elvis live. No one even comes close to his live preformances and with this album you get to listen to him in his prime as he sang in front of a worldwide audience via satellite - something that had never been done before. There are many memorable performances here and there's even 5 bonus tracks that were recorded hours after the live show in Hawaii. You could listen to this all the way through, time and time again because it's just so excellent. The first song 'See See Rider' really sets things off in an explosive manner, and ending the show with 'Can't Help Falling In Love' just finishes it off perfectly. You need this album as much as you need the DVD version so I'm highly recommending it to anyone. Top three songs are very difficult, but I reckon it's 'You Gave Me A Mountain' then 'What Now MY Love' and then the historic 'Suspicious Minds' performance. Get this.
See See Rider - Burning Love - Something - You Gave Me A Mountain - Steamroller Blues - My Way - Love Me - Johnny B. Goode - It's Over - Blue Suede Shoes - I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry - I Can't Stop Loving You - Hound Dog - What Now My Love - Fever - Welcome To My World - Suspicious Minds - Introductions by Elvis - I'll Remember You - Long Tall Sally / Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On - An American Trilogy - A Big Hunk O' Love - Can't Help Falling In Love BONUS SONGS: Blue Hawaii - Ku-u-i-po - No More - Hawaiian Wedding Song - Early Morning Rain
Elvis At Sun 8/10
This is the album that the defines Sun Records' success. A listing of many of Elvis's early tracks, all of which have been restored to supreme quality and remain timeless to this day. The tracks are all very country-oriented, starting with tracks like 'Blue Moon Of Kentucky' and 'Just Because', and both versions of 'I'm Left, You're Right, She's Gone'. There are some more famous songs on this album such as 'Mystery Train' and 'That's Alright'. butI personally prefer the later music in his career. This still stands up as a collection of absolute classics and once again comes highly recommended.
Harbor lights - I love you because - That's all right - Blue moon of Kentucky - Blue moon - Tomorrow night - I'll never let you go (little darlin') - Just because -. Good rockin' tonight - I don't care if the sun don't shine - Milkcow blues boogie - You're a heartbreaker - I'm left, you're right, she's gone (Slow Version) - I'm left, you're right, she's gone - Baby, let's play house - I forgot to remember to forget - Mystery train - Trying to get you - When it rains, it really pours
An Afternoon In The Garden 10/10
I've said it before and I'll say it again, that the only thing better than listening to an Elvis song is listening to a live Elvis song. This album is Elvis performing in 1972 in front of a huge crowd at the famour Madison Square Garden in New York. The show is fantastic and shows Elvis at his best, just months before the Hawaii concert. Many of the songs are the same as 'Aloha From hawaii', but they all have their own unique flavour for this concert. It contains a beautiful performance of 'Funny How Time Slips Away', which see's Elvis turn the lights on the crowd, and a hilarious start to 'Hound Dog' which begins slowly and suddenly jumps into full flair, causing the crowd to go ecstatic. It also features possibly the fastest version of 'All Shook Up' on record, try singing along to that one. Overall this is an album you'll listen to again and again, it can't get any less than full marks. A quality purchase.
That's Alright - Proud Mary - Never Been To Spain - You Don't Have To Say You Love Me - Until It's Time For You To Go - You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin' - Polk Salad Annie - Love Me - All Shook Up - Heartbreak Hotel - Teddy Bear - Don't Be Cruel - Love Me Tender - Blue Suede Shoes - Reconsider Baby - Hound Dog - I'll Remember You - Suspicious Minds - Introductions By Elvis - For The Good Times - American Trilogy - Funny How Time Slips Away - I Can't Stop Loving You - Can't Help Falling In Love
