SOUTHWEST AIRLINES  sign up to be notified when they have the sales where you can fly anywhere for $98 each way. If you want to go to Canada you can fly Southwest as far as Manchester NH, Detroit MI or Seattle WA and if you choose the right car rental company you can drive on up to Canada.* (Southwest Airlines also has a credit card that gives you flight credits for purchases you put on the card. One man puts all his utility bills and groceries on it and pays the bill at the end of the month but gets free flights. )

*Some of the car rental companies such as Payless Car Rental have in the fine print of the contract that if you cross a state line you get billed $1 per mile fee for each of the miles driven! And they have a tracking device on the car so they know where you go. Originally the GPS technology on rental cars was to help motorists find their way and to control theft. You may not be able to see the internal device so don't take it for granted that there is not one!  

Some more sophisticated tracking technology can tell if you damage the car and some will disengage the engine by remote control if you drive out of the country or if the car is stolen.

Budget Rent-A-car no longer charges the $1 per mile outside specified state lines.      

Acme Rent-a-car imposed $150 fines on customers when they drove more than 79 miles for two or more minutes until the Department of Consumer Protection stepped in stop the practice and make the car rental company refund the penalties. 

Ways to save on rental cars-

• rent off-airport, if possible. as airport fees can add another  20% 
• call your insurance company before you leave to find out if your current insurance will cover you so you don't have to buy the collision or loss damage insurance at the care rental office. If you don't have it your agent might be able to add it for the days you need it on your trip. The cost is usually minimal compared to what you will have to pay the auto rental agency. 
• Always bring the car back with a full gas tank to avoid them charging you $2.50 or more per gallon to fill it for you!
• Ask if they allow you to cross a state line without requiring you to pay extra fees. 
• Is there a second driver surcharge
• Are there out of town drop off fees if this is something you plan to do?

• Compare car rental firms and check for surcharges, They don't all charge these fees.
• Often  the lowest rental rates are on the company websites or through travel companies such as   EXPEDIA, ORBITZ, and  TRAVELOCITY. Be sure to compare several sites.
