FINANCIAL-

STATE SUPPLEMENTAL PAYMENT FROM DHS This state funded program provides financial assistance to the aged, blind and disabled population who have been determined financially eligible.  These individuals also receive Medicaid Services.

Energy Assistance Program helps eligible low income households with the cost of heating their homes, if they are responsible for heating costs. A household must meet certain income and resource requirements, and these requirements change yearly. If you receive SSI, your household is probably eligible. For more information, contact your local Area Agency on Aging.

TAX BENEFITS FOR SENIOR CITIZENS

DOUBLE HOMESTEAD EXEMPTION

Any homeowner who is otherwise eligible for homestead exemption and has a gross household income of $20,000 or less may qualify for an additional homestead exemption.

Proof of income such as W-2 and 1099 forms may be required. Federal and State income tax forms may not be sufficient evidence.

IMPORTANT!!
The filing period for the  additional homestead is January 1 to March 15 only. Applications can not be accepted any other time.

PROPERTY VALUATION FREEZE OR "SENIOR FREEZE"

This a property tax relief measure for homeowners ages 65 and older on January 1 with an annual  household income of less than $25,000. (Gross household income includes all income from every source including Social Security, interest, wages, rents and other income whether taxable or not taxable for federal or state income tax purposes.

Once frozen, the taxable assessed value of a homestead property will not increase until the home is sold. This sets a cap on property taxes, saving some hundreds of dollars a year, instead of seeing an increase of 5% a year, as some do. Check with County Assessor. (Some have said they protest their taxes first to get it down as low as possible and then get the freeze.)

IMPORTANT!!
The filing period for the valuation freeze  is January 1 to March 15 only. Applications can not be accepted any other time.

TRANSPORTATION FOR THE ELDERLY

  • Seniors in dire need for transportation for doctor visits- Transportation for the elderly and disabled

  • SoonerRide -non-emergency transportation (877) 404-4500
Check the "blue" pages of your local phone book for any county agency that is for seniors, or health &
social services, or something along those lines. In some areas of the US they have a county-sponsored mini-bus system that takes seniors (and possibly disabled non-seniors) to their medical appointments. You generally have to schedule with them a few days in advance. They don't function like a taxi, where they pick you up and directly drop you off, rather, they run a short route, picking up and discharging passengers along the way. In other words, sometimes you are on the bus a little longer, and sometimes you have to wait a bit at the doctor's office to be picked up. It helped me enormously when my dad had daily radiation treatments and was too tired to drive himself.
  • Senior medical transportation may be handled through the hospital (Social workers at your local hospital, or those that process Medicaid applications, can also be of help). It is not limited to bringing people to the hospital, they drop off at doctor's offices too. We also have a county system, although it's very underfunded, so availability is limited.
Look for any agency or division that is for seniors, health & human or social services, etc. www.state.ok.us
Call the county assistance office to see if they have a similar program. It probably is not advertised. They should know of a number. The person may have to go and fill out paperwork but anyone who gets Medicaid or the elderly/disabled qualifies. If they have regular dr. visits or therapy they should try to set up regular days and times so they can call well in advance. It is very hard to get appointments will gas prices so high a lot of people opt for county transport. If they do find someone else to take them that person can be reimbursed for gas.
  • In some areas of the US a van that picks people up for dr. appointments, as well as a service that will send someone to pick them up to take them to other appointments, and grocery shopping.... and things along those lines. It must be necessary (food, medicine, social interaction at sponsored activities, such as those at the local senior center, etc) and not just a trip to the mall. She will need to qualify for rides for medical and other reasons-
  • Those who need help and cannot get it, esp. the aged probably have done so much for others over the course of their years, it is nice that there is help for them.
A home health care agency might be able to give you number for state services.
  • Check and see if there is any kind of In home health services, in your area.. they may even qualify for someone helping them out, in the house, free plus driving them to the drs and errands.
Social Services or food stamps agencies might have some #'s, the biggest thing is Persistance.. finding the right people, who can are willing to help you and are knowledgable.
  • The Area Agency on Aging or a a local church in your area that has a senior adult ministry may take people to Dr. appointments.
Some (Catholic) high schools require 60 hours of community service in order to graduate. Many colleges look for this on the application, so maybe a Junior or Senior could do this in the afternoon, after school.

    carpoolworld.com  http://www.rideboard.com/categories.php?parent_id=248
  • Goodnewsgarage.org grants families and people in need with free cars if they need them to go to work. There are several organizations that do this and goodnewsgarage is one of them as well as 800charitycars.org (not taking applications until 2011), cars4christmas.org and carangels.org. If you have a definate estimate for the repairs you could also try modestneeds.org . BUT you won't qualify if you do not need a car to go to work.
