August 2, 2004 ~ John will be starring in a series of Hallmark crime movies. He will play a cop-turned- lawyer. Here's what it says on the Zap2it site:

John Larroquette will star in a series of crime movies on the Hallmark Channel, which is launching three separate mystery franchises.

The "Night Court" Emmy winner and recent star of "Happy Family" begins shooting "McBride," about a cop-turned-lawyer, in a couple of weeks. Hallmark is also developing two other franchises with female leads.

"McBride," scheduled to premiere in January, was created by Dean Hargrove, a TV-mystery veteran whose credits include "Columbo," "Matlock" and several "Perry Mason" movies. Larroquette will play Jim McBride, an attorney and former cop with an innate ability to flash back to the scene of a crime.

May 23, 2004 ~ Sadly, Happy Family has been cancelled. Reality programming has taken over the air waves and replaced many of the sitcoms on television. I hope one day that the situation will reverse because I'm not a fan of watching people eat bugs or men and women competing to win the affection of one bachelor or bachelorette.

Reality Check for Network

Undaunted, John has been volunteering his time to community benefits. On Wednesday, May 12th, in Mobile, Alabama, John spoke at the Drug Education Council's annual luncheon about his ordeal with alcoholism and credits organizations like them for saving his life.

"It's through your work, it's through your dedication and it's through your sacrifice that lives like mine are saved. You saved my life," Larroquette said.

Earlier, John helped to serve meals to the needy over the Easter holiday at the Los Angeles Mission on Skid Row.

John Larroquette of "Happy Family" said he came because when celebrities are involved in an event, it gets more news coverage. "A face like mine that's slightly recognizable comes down here to help -- that means the news media comes. That means the place gets coverage. That means more people get to know about the mission and it's mission," he said in a broadcast report.

September 1, 2003 ~ BURBANK, Calif. - John Larroquette said the father he plays on his new show called "Happy Family" is much like himself.

And the situations are so much like his own family, he "felt like Ozzy Osbourne for a moment."

"Of all the characters I've played, this is the closest to me as a human being," Larroquette told AP Radio. "The similarities are striking."

Like the dad on "Happy Family," Larroquette said he has three young adult kids who can't seem able to start their own lives. Even if they're not living under the same roof, he said "philosophically, they're still in the house."

And, there's another comparison. One of his own sons in real life — like one of the sons on the show — is with a much-older woman.

"(It) was a little scary, actually," Larroquette said.

June 13, 2002 ~ Here's more info on John's appearance on "Oscar and Felix."

Neil Simon's 'Odd Couple' finds new life as 'Oscar and Felix'

LOS ANGELES - One day, as Neil Simon was driving to his home in West Los Angeles, he turned on the radio and heard something familiar. An acting troupe was performing his classic 1965 play, "The Odd Couple." After listening for several minutes, the playwright mused to himself, "I can do better."

The result of that chance encounter is "Oscar and Felix, A New Look at the Odd Couple," which will have its premiere at the Geffen Playhouse in Westwood Village on June 19. John Larroquette, who collected a quartet of Emmys as the assistant district attorney in TV's "Night Court," plays the unkempt sports writer Oscar Madison. Joe Regalbuto, best known as Candice Bergen's reporter sidekick Frank Montana on the old TV series "Murphy Brown," acts the counterpoint as the fastidious photographer Felix Unger.

In individual interviews during a lunch break, the two stars of "Oscar and Felix" talked about working with Neil Simon.

"I think with Neil, you don't get a finished script until a couple of days after you close," joked Larroquette. "Every day he's there. It's great because he's probably the most successful playwright in history; years from now they'll be doing 'The Odd Couple' in space. Working with him in a room, what else could an actor want?"

"Neil keeps throwing in new lines," Regalbuto said. "He listens, absolutely. If we're uncomfortable with lines, he'll address it. He'll either explain to us what he's looking for or he'll say, `You're right, it doesn't work as well,' and he'll tweak. Or he'll spot something we didn't notice, and he'll say, 'I need to do this here.'"

The actors, both veterans in episodic comedy, claim they have no concerns about continually learning new lines.

"My memory is still pretty good; that artery hasn't hardened. Just from doing it, you start to learn through osmosis," Regalbuto said.

"I was a DJ in New Orleans when I was a kid, and 15 minutes of every hour I would 'rip and read' the AP news wire. I got in the habit of being able to read far ahead of where I was, absorbing the stuff that I was looking at," said Larroquette.

The key to Oscar and Felix, observed Regalbuto, is that "these guys love each other, they're great friends; they just happen to drive each other nuts."

"Oscar and Felix" is scheduled for a five-week run at the 500-seat Geffen (named for benefactor David Geffen, co-founder of DreamWorks SKG), with a possible extension of one or two weeks. Whether Simon is thinking of a tour and eventually New York, he's not saying. Both Regalbuto and Larroquette are currently unencumbered by TV series and willing to take the play wherever Simon desires.
