Chapter 14

Belle, Mimi and Chloe stood outside of the frat house. Loud music poured through some open windows, and they could hear a mixture of voices laughing and shouting. It had taken some convincing on Belle’s part, but she had managed to drag Mimi and Chloe along. Belle was hoping that maybe she could meet an older more mature man that would actually appreciate her, unlike some high school boys that would remain nameless. Mimi was worried at the idea of running into Brady at the party; she wasn’t looking forward to another confrontation with him. But she hadn’t wanted to stay home alone while Belle and Chloe went to the party. Chloe was a bit apprehensive – she’d never been to a party in her life, and had no idea what to expect from a college one. Part of her was excited at having this new experience, while another part of her was completely dreading it.

"Well ladies, I think we should probably actually go inside some time tonight," Belle suggested. She faced her friends and placed her hands on her hips. "Look, let’s just go in and have some fun. If you’re not having fun, fun will be forced upon you. Fun will be had by all," she threatened. Belle smiled at the worried expressions on her friends’ faces. "Come on!"

They walked up the steps to the porch and stopped. "Should we knock?" Chloe asked. "I think we can probably just let ourselves in," Mimi responded, faking a confidence she was not even close to feeling.

Belle put her hand on the knob to turn it. "Here goes nothing."

Shawn and Brady stood on the staircase, observing the raucous party below them. People were dancing to the loud and rocking music, and nearly everyone had some sort of drink in their hands. Shawn had never seen so many drunken people in one place his whole life.

Brady leaned down to yell at Shawn, "Are you having a good time?"

"What?" Shawn yelled back.

"I said, are you having a good time?"

"No, I don’t have the time. I forgot my watch!" Shawn yelled. Brady shook his head. He pointed with his finger to the upstairs, indicating that it would probably be easier to talk there. The front door opened, and both Brady and Shawn froze. They could see Belle, Mimi and Chloe in the doorway. Brady caught the eye of his friend Mike and nodded his head towards the front door. Mike and two of his frat brothers immediately approached the girls. What was going on? Shawn thought. Who were those guys, and what were they doing near Belle? He started down the stairs until Brady stopped him, and gestured again for Shawn to come upstairs with him. Shawn looked back at Belle, and couldn’t believe how beautiful she looked, like she’d just stepped out of some teen magazine. Her hair shone, even in the darkened room. She had on a pink halter-top that Shawn had seen and admired before, and he knew that it was delicately laced up in the back. He swallowed hard at the thought of it. Brady grabbed him by his upper arm and pulled him upstairs.

Shawn pulled out his cell phone from his pants pocket and dialed Philip’s number. Brady hesitated at the top of the landing, watching the scenario unfold before them. It took about five minutes for the maid to find Philip- he’d been working outside in the yard with the gardener.

"Hello?" Philip said, out of breath.

"Philip?" Shawn yelled as he plugged his free ear with a finger.

"Shawn, is that you? Where in the hell are you, an airport runway?"

"No, I’m at the frat party. You coming?" Shawn asked.

"I don’t know, man. I’m totally wiped from the chores I had to do. I was thinking I might just go to bed," Philip replied, stretching his free arm above his head.

"Chloe’s here," Shawn said.

"Chloe’s there?" Philip echoed in complete surprise as he dropped his arm.

"Yeah, and some college guy is hanging all over her. Thought you might want to come check it out." Shawn had not missed the definite sparks that were flying between Philip and Chloe last night at the dance. Not even he was that clueless.

Philip clenched his hand into a fist. No way was anyone going to move in on Chloe. He looked down at his grimy clothes. "I have a few more things to finish up, and then I have to shower and change. But I’ll be there as soon as I can."

"See you." Shawn hung his phone up and turned to follow Brady. They entered a room bathed in purple light. "What’s going on? Why didn’t we go and talk to the girls?"

Brady gave Shawn a half-smile. "Stick with me cousin, and by the end of the night I think you’ll find your fondest wishes coming true."

The girls looked around the room, oblivious to the three men headed towards them. The guys walked over and stopped directly in front of them and gestured towards the porch as if they wanted them to step back out. The girls filed out, wondering what was happening.

Once outside, the tall blonde closed the door behind them. Were these guys kicking them out of the party? Did they look that young? Belle looked at them warily and said, "We were invited, you know. My brother Brady Black invited us."

"We know," the blonde smiled. "My name is Chris. Brady asked us to look out for you." He looked at Belle. "He said to look for the three prettiest girls at the party. He wasn’t kidding." The girls smiled, embarrassed, and glanced at one another. Chris continued, "Seeing as how you’re Brady’s sister, you must be Belle." She smiled back at him. "Yes, I’m Belle, and these are my friends Mimi and Chloe." Chris nodded to each of them. He gestured to the guy with dark brown hair and green eyes and said, "This is Mike," and pointing to the one with light brown hair said, "and this is Garth."

"Garth?" Mimi asked with a laugh. "As in ‘Wayne and’?"

"Yes, Mimi, as in ‘screaming’," Garth smiled back. He offered her his arm. "Would you mind if I showed you around?"

This gesture completely caught Mimi off guard. "Sure," she stammered and slipped her hand through his arm. He opened the door for her and they headed back inside to the party, with Mimi looking over her shoulder at her two friends.

Chris turned to Belle. "There’s some people in there that are dying to meet the infamous Brady Black’s younger sister. Care to?" Belle looked at Chloe, and then back at Chris. "Yeah, um, okay."

Chloe stood there feeling stupid. Sure, she was the loser that was left over. Mike turned to her and his eyes roved over her body and back up to her face. "Looks like we saved the best for last." Chloe slightly blushed.

"Hey, are you hungry? Thirsty?" Mike asked.

"Actually I am. I kind of forgot to eat today," Chloe said sheepishly.

"You know, I don’t get women. There are a lot of things I’ve forgotten to do. I’ve forgotten where I put my keys. I’ve forgotten to study for tests. Heck, around some pretty girls I’ve even forgotten my name. But the one thing I’ve never forgotten to do is eat," Mike teased. "Come on. Maybe there’s some food left inside."

Chloe followed behind Mike through a throng of people to the table set up for refreshments. It looked as if it had been mostly cleared out – there were leftover crusts from pizza and small remnants of sub sandwiches. There were still some pretzels and chips, but Chloe had a hankering for something sweet, not salty. Mike leaned in and yelled in her ear, "Do you want something to drink?"

"Yes, I would love some water!" she shouted back.

"I’ll be right back, I have to go to the kitchen to get it for you!" he hollered.

Chloe stood there, nervously shifting her weight, and tucking her hair behind her left ear. She couldn’t believe how loud the music was. She looked around, regarding the people surrounding her. Chloe brushed the burgundy crushed velvet top she was wearing. Belle had assured her before they left that she looked amazing, so she at least didn’t have that to worry that people would make fun of her for her appearance. Chloe had left her protective glasses behind under Belle’s insistence, and was missing the comfort they usually afforded her. She looked over at the end of the table, and saw plastic glasses with different colored cubes in them. She walked over and picked a glass with pink squares up. It looked like Jell-O. She placed one in her mouth – strawberry. Her favorite. She picked up another piece and began eating the strawberry Jell-O. It tasted a little strange, but she was really hungry. She finished one glass and picked another one up. She thought it was so considerate that they put them into these individual cups so that people could carry it around. She giggled at the thought of these tough fraternity men serving Jell-O at a party.

Mike went into the kitchen and grabbed a bottle of water for Chloe along with a bottle of beer for himself from a huge metal tub filled with ice and other drinks. One of his fraternity brothers approached him and gave him a high five. "Hey man, that is one scorching babe I saw you with. She’s definitely mattressable. Gonna score tonight?"

Mike smirked and took a swig of his beer. "Brady said hands off his sister and her friend Mimi. He didn’t say anything about Chloe."

**************************************************

Belle and Chris had made the rounds and he introduced her to a few people. Belle saw that Mimi and Garth were on the floor dancing. She was surprised by how well Garth moved. Not many guys back at school were into dancing. Except for Shawn. He loved to dance. Stop it! You’re here and a cute guy is paying attention to you. Focus, she reprimanded. Chris was leading her up the stairs. She looked at him nervously and paused. He wasn’t taking her up to his room, was he? He leaned down and yelled, "There’s a lounge upstairs. I thought we could talk."

She nodded, and went upstairs with him. She was surprised that she hadn’t seen Brady yet. Why would he ask these guys to look out for her and not come and see them himself?

Chris led her into a room lit with faint purple lights. There were various couches, beanbags and chairs scattered throughout the room. There were quite a few people standing, sitting, all talking; one couple was kissing. The room was definitely quieter than anything downstairs, although the thudding of the bass could be felt through the floor. Belle sat down on a couch that was in the middle of the room next to Chris.

"So Belle Black, tell me, what kind of guy do you like?" Chris asked, as he draped his arm along the back of the couch.

"Boy, you don’t waste any time, do you?" she replied in shock.

"Don’t see any point. Life’s too short. So…tell me the perfect guy’s qualifications."

Belle sighed and thought. Shawn Brady. Those are the qualifications. "Well, he has to be kind. And a good person. Smart, funny, charming, humble, loving, and treat me like a queen."

"Me, me, me, me, me, obviously not me if I say I am, me, and I’m more than willing to try the last one. What else?" Chris responded quickly.

Belle laughed. "I guess I really want a guy that would be willing to make a fool of himself for me. You know, a guy that wouldn’t be afraid to hold back his feelings." Something Shawn Brady wouldn’t do in a million years. He thought couples in love were stupid and pathetic, that if a guy showed any sign of affection he was whipped and emasculated.

Chris said, "Hey, I could run downstairs and tell everyone how cute you are. Would that count?" Belle giggled again. She could definitely get used to this kind of attention. She flicked her hair back behind her shoulder. She tried to shut Shawn out of her mind and concentrate entirely on Chris.

Leaning against the back of the couch on a beanbag Shawn held his breath, afraid to make any sound and draw Belle’s attention to him.

**************************************************

Chloe started wavering slightly. What had happened to…what was his name?…Matt? Mark? Mike? She felt flushed, as if the room had started rising in temperature like an oven. She noticed a guy approaching her…or was it two guys? Her hair was suddenly making her feel even hotter. She grabbed it and twisted it and held it on top of her head with her left hand.

"Hi, I’m Steve Hanson," he said as he proffered his hand.

"Chloe." She shook his hand loosely.

"Chloe? Like Madonna? Or do you have a last name?" he joked.

Chloe thought. She had a last name. What was it? "Lane. Chloe Lane. That’s it."

"Boy, you’re really wasted, aren’t you?"

"Wasted? What do you mean? Drunk? I’m not drunk. I haven’t had anything to drink," Chloe replied, starting to slur her words a little. Mike came up behind Chloe and told Steve to back off. Steve held up his hands. "Sorry man, didn’t know she was with you."

"Sorry about that, Chloe. You just can’t go around with a face as pretty as yours and not expect every idiot in the room to throw himself at you." Mike stepped in front of Chloe and saw her leaning from side to side.

"Mike!" Chloe shouted, and threw her arms around his neck, releasing her hair and falling against him. He noticed several empty glasses of Jell-O shooters on the end of the table where Chloe had been standing. "Chloe, how many of these did you have?"

"It hurts to think," she protested.

"I know something we can do besides thinking. Do you want to go upstairs to my room, Chloe?" Mike suggested, while running his hand along her arm.

Chloe shrugged, still hanging limply against Mike. "Okay."
