Chapter 11

Philip pushed the door open to the girl’s bathroom and stepped inside. The room was completely empty. I thought Shawn said Chloe was in here, he thought.

Then he heard a slight sniffle. He ducked his head down and began to look underneath stall doors. In the very last stall he saw a pair of strappy red high heels. Philip went to the stall door and called out, "Chloe?"

Chloe pulled the door open to see Philip in a pair of jeans and a light blue t-shirt. His hair was dripping wet. It looked as if he’d just stepped out of the shower. Chloe had placed the lid to the toilet down and was sitting there crying into her hands. Philip crouched down and placed his hand under Chloe’s chin and forced her to look at him. He could see the tearstains that trailed down her face. Her eyes were brimming with even more uncried tears. The tears had turned her eyes into an unbelievably bright shade of blue.

"Chloe, I’m so sorry this happened," Philip said softly.

Chloe shook her head. "It wasn’t your fault. It should be me apologizing to you. Your poor suit. Was it very expensive?"

"It’ll be fine, Chloe. I’ll explain to my dad," he replied. He was sure though, knowing his father, that he’d be doing more chores for Henderson to replace the suit.

Philip reached up and with his thumb brushed away Chloe’s tears from her cheeks. This sweet gesture caused Chloe to cry even more. Why was Philip doing all this?

"You know, this is the second time you’ve cried in front of me," Philip told her, somewhat humbled that Chloe had allowed him to see her so emotional.

"I don’t know what’s wrong with me. It must be…" Chloe trailed off. She couldn’t tell Philip it was Dr. Evans’ therapy that had helped her to get so in touch with her emotions.

"Must be what?" Philip prompted.

"I don’t know. It just must be how exposed I felt tonight. It was like that night at Shawn’s party. I’ve always been so careful to guard my emotions. When I sang, I felt like everyone could see into my soul. Tonight, being with you, talking to you, I’ve felt like I’ve let all my defenses down and it scares me," Chloe explained.

"You know, you just exposed yourself again by telling me that," Philip said. He couldn’t believe how open Chloe was being with him.

Chloe nodded her head silently.

"And hey, if there’s any other part of yourself that you’d like to expose to me tonight, I just want you to know that I have no problem with that," Philip teased gently.

Chloe looked up at Philip, and started to laugh.

"Wow. I actually made Chloe Lane laugh. That’s enough to make any guy feel great about himself," Philip smiled.

She was so beautiful, it made Philip ache to really touch her. He wanted so badly to kiss her. He stopped brushing away her tears and left his hand on her cheek, holding her.

"Your eyes, Chloe. They look so pretty tonight. That dress really brings out the blue in your eyes." He continued to look at her.

"Why are you looking at me like that?" Chloe asked.

"Don’t you feel it, Chloe?" Philip whispered.

It looked like Philip was going to kiss her. Chloe placed her hands on Philip’s chest as if to stop him.

"Chloe?" Philip asked, confused.

"I’ve, um, never…never…" Chloe faltered, unable to get the words out. She looked down at the floor.

"Chloe, are you telling me you’ve never been kissed?"

"Yes. I’m a full-fledged member of the Virgin Lips Club," Chloe said, ashamed.

Philip turned Chloe’s face so that she was looking at him again. "Not even Spin The Bottle at a party?"

"No parties," Chloe shrugged.

Philip didn’t know why, but the thought that no one had ever kissed Chloe made him really happy. It had to be some male territorial thing. Philip was now even more interested in kissing Chloe – the idea of being the first to do so highly intrigued him. Chloe was thinking that Philip probably thought she was so lame. Who got to be this old and unkissed?

Chloe went to stand up. She had shared too much that evening. Philip stood up with her. "You know, we could remedy this right here and now," he smiled with those disarming dimples.

Chloe studied him. Philip was far too attractive for his own good, especially now, with her feeling so vulnerable, and him with damp hair, and those sparkling eyes…

"You’re so beautiful, Chloe," Philip murmured.

"It’s just a dress, Philip." Chloe wiped some of her lipstick on the back of her hand. "It’s just make-up. Underneath all this I’m still me."

"That’s the part I was talking about." Philip began to caress Chloe’s cheek with the back of his hand. He started to lean in closer to Chloe, as her heart did double-time.

Belle opened the bathroom door and called out, "Chloe?"

Philip sighed and rested his forehead on Chloe’s. "Saved by the Belle." Philip dropped his hands and Chloe stepped out of the stall to see Belle. Belle handed Chloe her cape and purse. Chloe quickly put her glasses back on. "Nobody’s home at my house. I don’t know how to get out of here."

Belle was beyond shocked when Philip stepped out of the stall after Chloe. "My limo is still out front. I can take you guys home."

"Oh, okay, Philip, sure," Belle smiled. Chloe was going to have some serious explaining to do. Looked like Belle’s plan had worked even better for Chloe than she could have hoped. But on her end with Shawn…that had been a complete bust.

Mimi walked into the bathroom and stopped short when she saw Philip. "Did ya get lost, Philip?"

Philip smiled. "Come on ladies. Your chariot awaits."

The ride home was an especially quiet one. Philip had, to Belle’s dismay, offered to take Shawn home as well. Belle had nothing to say to Shawn. She couldn’t believe how badly this evening had gone for them. She and Shawn had always fought and teased one another, but something had changed tonight. The arguing was different. It had been so intense. Maybe Shawn actually did have feelings for her. Otherwise he wouldn’t have been so passionate. Or maybe that’s just wishful thinking on my part, Belle thought. Shawn was similarly wary about getting into another argument with Belle. He had to figure out a way to make things okay between them again. He was afraid that if he opened his mouth Belle would start screaming at him again in front of everyone. He wished he knew what it was that he had done to make her so angry.

Philip couldn’t keep his eyes off of Chloe. Chloe kept her gaze carefully averted, but still managed to sneak glances at Philip out of the corner of her eye. They were sitting next to each other, almost touching. Chloe could feel the warmth from Philip’s body but resisted the urge to scoot closer to him. She wondered how Philip would act with her in the light of day. Monday at school could be an entirely different story.

Mimi just sat absorbing the entire scenario in front of her. Philip was clearly possessed, Shawn and Belle were obviously furious about something, and she couldn’t get over the change in Chloe. She seemed like a totally different person. Maybe she could actually get along with Chloe if she continued to dress like a normal human being. Mimi had to admire the amount of guts it had taken Chloe to come talk to her that afternoon. Maybe she could get past it. For Belle’s sake, she reminded herself.

The limo came to a stop in front of Belle’s building.

"Well, it’s been real, guys. Real what, I don’t know, but I’m out," Mimi said as she climbed out of the car. Belle thanked Philip for the ride and also climbed out.

Chloe sat for a moment, not wanting to move. She looked over at Philip shyly and flashed him a gorgeous smile. Belle reached back into the car, grabbing Chloe by the arm and pulled her out. "Come on, Chloe." Belle slammed the door behind Chloe and pulled her into the lobby.

"Brrr, you could feel that chill all the way over here," Philip remarked.

Shawn glared at him. "Just drop it, okay? I don’t feel like talking about it. Just take me home."

The girls stepped off the elevator once at the penthouse. Belle pulled her key out of her purse to let them in. They stood in the entrance as Belle went around and started turning a few lights on. Belle came back over to her friends. "Let’s go upstairs and get changed out of these clothes."

The trio headed upstairs and went into Belle’s room. Mimi had started to untie the drawstring of her halter-top when a male voice suddenly sounded into Belle’s room.

"What do we have here? A meeting of the ugly convention?"

Mimi whirled around to face Brady. "Yes and look, our guest speaker just arrived."

Brady was stunned. It was her, here in Belle’s room? What was going on?

"Brady, don’t you know how to answer a phone? I called here earlier looking for a ride. Why didn’t you pick up?" Belle questioned.

Brady was still dumbfounded by finding his mystery woman here in his house, starting to get undressed…"Uh, I had, my uh, headphones on. I didn’t hear the phone."

"Well, you almost gave us a heart attack sneaking up like that," Belle scolded, and walked over to the door. "Good night, Brady," she said as she shut the door in his face. Brady stood there with the door closed on him. She was obviously a friend of Belle’s, or else she wouldn’t have been there. Could it be…Mimi? He hadn’t been home in a couple of years, but he definitely did not remember Mimi looking like that. Had Belle made another new friend that he was unaware of?

Brady went downstairs to play some video games. He needed the distraction. He was tempted to go back upstairs and demand an explanation, but decided playing it cool was a much better approach. He looked around in disgust at all the lights Belle had turned on. She must think Dad has stock in the electric company. He went around and began turning them off.

Mimi sighed as Belle closed the door. "That man is cruelly depriving a village somewhere of their idiot."

After the girls had changed into their pajamas and scrubbed their make-up off, Belle insisted that she try her new nail polish out on Mimi and Chloe. Mimi had already had her turn, and Belle was taking off Chloe’s old polish with remover.

"At what point this evening are you going to tell us what happened with you and Philip?" Belle asked.

Chloe blushed, and ducked her head. "I don’t know if I want to share."

Mimi rolled her eyes and blew on her nails. "Okay, that means it’s really good. You have to tell us now. The suspense may actually kill us."

Chloe shrugged. "I don’t know what to think. I couldn’t tell what he was thinking or what he was after."

"Why don’t you tell us what he said and we’ll tell you what it meant?" Belle suggested as she began applying the polish.

"Tell us everything he said. Don’t leave out one comma, apostrophe or ampersand." Mimi said eagerly as she settled in.

"He told me I looked beautiful," Chloe said.

"Well, that means he’s sweet," Mimi said.

"He also told me my dress brought out the blue in my eyes," Chloe continued.

"Well, that means he’s gay," Mimi replied. The three looked at one another and erupted into a fit of giggles.

"Honestly, Chloe. I saw you and Philip together tonight. It was so romantic the way he was looking at you. It was like something out of a movie. I’d love to have a guy look at me like that," Belle sighed dreamily.

Chloe was unused to sitting around talking to girlfriends like this, especially about boys. She’d never really had a boy to talk about before. But she was liking it. I could definitely get used to it, she thought.

"Kind of funny though, how Shawn took Chloe and Philip took Belle but you guys somehow switched," Mimi remarked.

"That was sort of the plan," Belle confessed.

"Plan? There was a plan and no one told me?" Mimi asked, highly offended.

"I was hoping that once Philip got a good look at Chloe that he’d run off and leave me and Shawn alone. That part worked, but little did I know that Shawn Brady was going to be a total jerk to me the whole night." Belle picked up her bottled water, and it was empty. "Meems, would you mind going downstairs and getting us some more water?"

"Sure. Be right back."

Mimi went out of Belle’s room and headed down the stairs. The lights were all off. She hoped that meant Brady was in bed. She didn’t want to turn any back on, in case they woke him up. Mimi was in no mood to deal with Brady Black. She cut through the dining room and headed towards the kitchen. She stubbed her little toe on the leg of a chair and started jumping up and down. "Ow, ow, ow…"

"Hey, you want a little cheese with that whine?" Brady asked. He was sitting in the family room playing a game and had stopped to watch Mimi.

"Don’t you have anything better to do than spy on people?" Mimi growled in disgust and went into the kitchen to get away from him.

Mimi opened the fridge and pulled out three bottles of water. She slammed the door and upon turning around found Brady standing right behind her. "Dammit, Brady. You almost made me jump out of my skin."

"Hmm. It would probably be a definite improvement if you did," he commented sarcastically.
