Chapter 5
Nick knocked on my door about an hour later, and I could tell that my 98° poster startled him. I opened my door, and peeked out. He was wearing tear-aways, and a “Nike” T-shirt. (And I must say, he didn’t look too bad) I opened my door a little more, and he asked if he could come in. I said he could, but conveniently, couldn’t close the door.
“I have a question, “ he said.
“Shoot.”
“What’s high school really like? I asked Kevin, and Howie, but they weren’t really much help, and since I heard your mom saying you were a junior I decided to ask you.”
“That’s a good question….” I started. I filled him in on the horrors of the halls and classes like English, and how horrible the teachers are. But, I also told him about the dances, and how fun things like chorus and band are if you are in there with your friends. I could tell he was getting depressed, so I tried to cheer him up by showing him pictures of my friends, and hoped he would find them amusing.
“Who’s that?” he asked.
“That’s my friend Nicole,” I said. “She’s really into acting.”
“She looks really cute. How old is she?”
“Well, since I am seventeen, and she’s about a year older than me…. She’s eighteen.” I said.
“Oh, who’s that?”
“That’s Vicky, and that’s her boyfriend Joe.” I said pointing to a guy who seemed to have a lampshade on his head in the picture.
“Where is this?” he asked.
“Those pictures I took when I went to Cancun with my family.”
“Cool, I haven’t been on a real vacation in years. Almost all that traveling I do is with the group, and then I am so sick of going places I just stay at home.”
“That’s true, but at least you get to go really cool places, and you go with friends.” I replied.
“Yeah, that’s true…well, thank you for answering my questions, and someday I must meet your friends, they look like cool people in these pictures.”
“Ok, that’s fine with me, and probably more than fine with them.”
Nick left the room chuckling to himself, and I went back to doing the large amount of homework I had to do. I turned on the radio, and “INBYH” came on, and I considered turning it up, but decided that they probably had had enough of that song, so I just kept it on low. At about three, I got hungry, and ventured downstairs, where Kevin was rummaging in the refrigerator, and AJ was trying to do some dancing in the front room. Now, when I was little, I tried to dance in that room, but soon found out that it really is smaller than it seems. I found this out when I crashed into the baby grand piano we have, and almost got murdered by my mother. So, just before I could impart this little piece of information to him, AJ went flying down the steps toward the basement. Since I live in a split level, there are only six steps, so he wasn’t hurt, just a little stunned at the fact that he just fell down the steps.
Brian, who had been watching TV down there, just about fell off the recliner he was in, because it scared him out of his TV induced trance. Kevin came over to see what happened, and started to talk with a mouth full of chicken and ham.
“Ha you hurt yourself klutz!!” Kevin said, mocking AJ.
“No, I didn’t hurt myself. And I am not a klutz.” He said.
“I was about to tell you that it wasn’t a good thing to dance in that room. I found it out the hard way myself.” I said.
“You could have told me before I fell….”
“Yeah, but it was funny,” I said.
“Not the point.”
AJ dusted himself off, and went over to the door, and looked out. The sky was black, and the storm was just beginning to kick in. The phone rang, and I ran for it in my room. Chapter 6
